No longer able to hide pictures

Since the update to 4.4.2 I have found that I can no longer hide pictures \ videos on the device using the previously succesful methods. I used to either rename a folder with a full stop in the front (ie .system) and this would prevent it showing in the gallery app or alternatively add a .nomedia.txt file to the folder with the items that I did not want shown in the gallery.

Now although all the items that were in those folders previously remain hidden any new ones are not.

Any advice on how to rectify this issue?

.nomedia (not .nomedia.txt) works for me, and this will prevent ALL media files in the folder that it is in from being shown in the gallery/media app. This is a blank file.

As far as I know, you could never suppress specific files by declaring them in .nomedia.txt. Its always been all or nothing (within each particular folder) using .nomedia

That was always how it was for me also but since the update the other day any new photos \ pictures \ videos I add to the folder are still visible in the gallery.

I have tried creating a new .nomedia.txt file but still to no avail.

Have you had the update for your phones?

EDIT: Problem solved. I just realised that since the update whenever I tried to save a new .nomedia file to the relevant folder on my SD card it was failing (I missed the little notification that flashed up briefly at the bottom of the screen telling me so). One of the issues the new update has left me with unfortunately. So I created it on the internal memory then copied it to the folder I wanted to hide photos in and viola it worked again.

Many thanks for the responses.
