No micro sd slot = limited device

Whoever decided to not have a micro sd slot on this tablet are short sighted rubes. It is obvious Amazon wants this device locked down. Added: Likely a futile effort though.

With only a few gigs for media and apps, this device is constrained out of the gate. Pure stupid, but that is my opinion.

I was thinking about this fact.

Then it hit me.

They don't have an SD card to prevent anyone who wants to use it as a full sized tablet from doing so.

Even if it gets rooted.. the limited space and no way of increasing it means it has limited market value as a tablet.

But, by having the amazon cloud option, people still have incentive to buy it for an ereader.

Makes sense if they are possibly selling the device for a loss in hopes of making up the loss in revenue from media sold :/

All this device is practical for is reading and browsing. Most people could care less for cloud data, since this forces them to always be around a wifi connection.

You mailed what their intent is. I hope it fails.

If you're sitting in your house on wifi, you don't need 64 GB of data on your device. If you're on the road, you have all your reading material and all your apps offline. Do you need more than 8 GB of music offline? I think not. This device will be a gigantic success.

Then why bother spending more for the fire? Why not just get one of the previous Kindles?

Agreed. The Fire is going to go down in flames (compared to the hype. I expect it will still do ok).

@ $199 they are taking a huge loss. Amazon is amazing when you are a prime member and can utilize their cloud service. It would have been easy for them to add expandable memory but it would defeat their purpose of utilizing THEM for future apps, media and books. The will surely recoup their losses quickly.

3G would be great to have but Wi-Fi will suffice for now. I'm sure they held out so in 6-8 months they can re-release with a 3G option. Music is memory consuming but this wont be peoples primary music holder. Heck I have a galaxy S2 with 48gb of space but STILL use my ipod.

With pandora and cloud available 8gb is plenty. It will be fun to play some droid games on a 7 inch screen, stream shows and movies over 3G and Wi-Fi and browse the web all on a perfect sized tablet that is not overbearing and even EASIER to carry around.

I can't wait!

Seems your are using your own standard of use on everyone. 8GB is low for media storage and forces most to rely on the cloud and wifi. Hard to use when traveling.

Not to mention 8gb is only a few gigs, since format takes up 500 megs, app storage takes up space and so does the OS.

Are you an Amazon marketing person? Anyway you want to spin it, no microsd with this small storage is anti consumer and pure stupid. At least evil Apple sells models with more storage.

This device will sell well out of the gate, but will quickly choke, due to the storage. Expect a mountain of these on eBay in a few months.

Amazon should have taken their horse blinds off, since trying to force people into their cloud to drive revenue is short sighted.

Added:

Amazon is suddenly making Apple seem like good people.

The previous Kindles don't have access to VOD, don't have access to the cloud player and don't have access to the apps in the app store.

I know of one media storage device that's extremely popular, sells like hotcakes and gets rave reviews - 8 GB iPod Touch. It's a consumption device. It's a mobile gaming device. It's a music player. It sells like hotcakes.

I'm not an Amazon marketing person although I admit to being something of an Amazon fanboy. Won't lie about that. Apple makes tons of money on it's 8 GB iTouch an even it's 8 GB iPhone 3GS. People are extremely happy with those devices.

This device will be a huge winner for Amazon and no one except a small minority will complain about the space. Amazon will come out with a 16 GB model down the road and the complainers will go away.

This device is being touted as the iPad killer we have waited for. It has a small screen, limited memory, no way to upgrade it apparently. My guess is lots of people will order one and discover its limitations and I see lots of returns.

Not too long ago, the HP Touchpad was a highly touted device. We know what happened there.

I hope it is a success but do not be surprised if it fails.

Who is touting the device as an iPad killer? If they are, they're fools. Amazon certainly isn't. This device is targeted at the Nook Color, not the iPad.

For folks that dwell in these forums that want a lower cost tablet, the Archos G9 8" will be a better buy:

1. Getting good initial pre-reviews
2. 4430 chipset
3. Micro sd slot
4. Both USB ports are host ports. The full USB port for the 3D dongle can be used to power and use hard drives and thumbdrives. Very cool for a smaller tablet.
5. Full Android market (not just the Amazon iTunes wannabe).

If you can care less for storage, media or much game space (only want to browse and eRead), the Fire would be better, since $100 less.

Guess you have really low standards for the quality of music your listening to :/

That may be fine if your at 128kbps..

Either way, I am just going to wait..

If I were a betting man, I'd bet the nook color drops to 200$ or heck maybe even 150$ pretty soon.

And even if it doesn't I can handle paying 50$ more A. expandable storage and B. the ability to make it into a full fledged tablet WITHOUT voiding warranty.

The only advantage the kindle has over it, is a dual core processor.. which pales in comparison to expandable memory, full tablet functionality and no voided warranty.

I am also not going to leave out the Lenovo A1 which may have everything nook color has + microphone + 2 camera's and will be the same cost as the kindle fire.

Really what bothers me.. is if the kindle didn't have a dual core processor it would be looked at entirely.

I think it is sad that people are so quick to see "IPS screen, Dual core processor" and call it a day. I mean At least in the modding world.. There are other better options that will be available.. and the fire still gets more attention..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Amazon streams your music to you at the same quality you upload them.

The Kindle Fire isn't targetted at nerds who want a full featured tablet. It's targetted at people who want to have a media consumption device. I think the Fire is going to be awesome at that. It does like 70-80% of what any other tablet out there will do at half the price.

Because outside the modding world, no one cares at all. None of the average consumers care about how much ram, how many cores, how fast a processor, etc..... Doesn't even matter. They want something that runs, is snappy, easy to use and does what they need it to do which is basically just consume media.

Spin all day, but Amazon should have put a micro sd slot in the thing. This is the only Android tablet with such low storage not to have one. There WILL be many returns of this product.

Most people will not be duped into the cloud, but will assume without checking that it has a micro sd slot.

Seems a given the refresh of this will have a micro sd.

What's wrong with the cloud?

As I mentioned before, Apple makes an 8 GB iTouch. Has no micro SD slot. Does not have many returns.

Not so sure the Touch is a good example because Apple makes several models with more memory. They currently offer a 64GB version, for example.

Nothing wrong with the cloud. As long as you have access, that is. No access, no cloud and no stuff. I keep about 6 Gigs of music on my iPad and that is fine for me. My iPod is the basic 8 GB model and I do not really need more. I do not use it much but with iFile, I might be able to use the Apple CC Kit, so I could have unlimited memory.

At least I can carry 60 or more Gigs with me in the form of MicroSD Cards, so I am really not hampered as far as the iPad goes.

When you dig deep into the cloud, you will discover there can be issues. Dropbox and their problems with hash was a problem, but like most issues, it was corrected. Public outcry and Dropbox's desire to stay in business and please customers cured that specific issue.

I think there will be issues for many users that can't deal with the small amount of memory and no slots for SD cards. I think people are expecting the "iPad Experience" and a few will be disappointed. The device is certainly not equal to the iPad. It will likely be acceptable to most, but some of those users will discover that they have a limited device.

I wish Amazon great luck, but I see many unhappy returns. Unless they introduce different models or versions. To do that, there must be a market. For me, the amazon device is just another device in a sea of devices. Not good, not bad, just one more device.
