no real GPS?

to start off, I have no data plan...

I have problems getting a GPS signal without wifi/data. If i am at home and the option "use wireless networks" is on, and connected to wifi, i get perfect signal.

However, when the option is off, no matter where I am (outside, inside, right beside a satallite) i never get a signal (0 satallites)..

now I was under the impression that the device has a GPS antenna, with A-GPS supportt, and not just A-GPS ?

I am also new to android, so maybe there is something that needs to be done that i dont know about??
Android experts, chime in!

network:virgin mobile, canada
firmware: 2.1, unrooted, original

Welcome to the forums!
"Use wireless networks" option enables acquring of position from Wi-Fi and mobile networks, to enable real GPS just enable "Use GPS satellites" (next option is "Use assisted GPS", which means A-GPS).

Thanks! i like this forum already alot of knowledge...

yeah that option is always on and I never get signal no matter where I am ...tried different apps like mapdroyd and Sygic, both the same thing.

works perfectly with wifi/data only..which is why i am confused.

I find on my i5500 that once I have enabled GPS I have to restart the thing before it actually recognises that GPS is on. Trouble is with A-GPS the phone does not have the maps on it, they are downloaded depending on where the GPS says you are. Hence when you are on wifi the maps download very quickly, or they do for me anyways. I find the wifi and/or network option not to be very accurate with where I actually am as well, but GPS works fine for me. Maybe if you really cant get GPS to work, the handset if faulty?

just enabled again, restarted and voila ! working perfect now without data/wifi option! thank you very muchh now it's like my all in one device :)
yeahhh i know about the maps, that's why i downloaded all the maps i need on to the SD card so I don't have to use data !
thanks again everyone !
