No service with one phone, 3 bars with another?!

Have been getting terrible reception (no service/emergency calls only usually, 1 bar if I'm lucky whilst hanging my body half out the window...) whilst visiting my father but when I tried out the sim in the phone I was using last year, an ancient steam-powered HTC Google Magic, I get 2-3 bars (-90 to -100 dbm) no problem. Very odd.

I find it difficult to believe that the sgs2 has a much poorer gsm radio than the old htc. Any one come across anything like this?

Hi there

Not much to contribute, sorry.

Just like to say, that to the contrary, my phone seem to be reception maniac.
When I go to basement, 2 levels below ground, my phone has full 3G and Data like it was running on steroids. My wife's HTC Sensation XL barely gets a bar, and my son's iPhone is totally without network, and remains without service for many minutes after we get out of car park.
Just like to add, we are all using the same Telco provider, but all our phones are unlock units, free of any Telco firmware.
Sometimes the situation my might be reversed, but over all, the reception is very good.
I noticed tho that in some places, specific locations or spots, I can never get 3G while others right next to me do. But the others are using phones with telco firmware.

What am I trying to say is, it might not be the phone itself, but perhaps the telco's custom firmware or the lack of Telcon's firmware :)

regards
