No SMS Notifications while viewing current message

Hi fellow Androidians (if thats even a word). I have a fully stock AT&T Samsung Note 3 running 4.4.4. I have searched high and low for this with little result. I apologize if this is a repeat thread, I may have not searched the right terms.

I'm not getting sms notifications while in conversation with someone. No ring, vibrate or notification bar while viewing that text. If the phone locks or I back out of the conversation notifications work. If I get new texts from other contacts it works. This is very annoying since I miss new texts if I put my phone down and walk away.

I am using stock everything, not rooted, never been rooted, I've factory reset several times, I'm not using a 3rd party messaging app. All notifications are set, nothing is muted, 100% stock, factoy, out of the box. I don't want to use a 3rd party message app since most are jangley and have features I don't need or use. It just has to work.

Has anyone had/have this issue and found a fix without using other message apps? Is this only with Samsung phones or Android in general? Thanks in advance!

This is an Android thing, as far as I'm aware, because I've had it happen on just about every smartphone I've owned. I'm not sure why the phone operates this way, but I'm guessing that the thought process is if you're already in the conversation, then you're already monitoring for any changes, so a notification is unnecessary (that, or it's a big bug that has just somehow gotten overlooked).

My solution has been to get in the habit of backing out of the conversation before I let go of the device. There could be a third-party app that operates the way you and I would prefer the stock messaging app to act, but if there is, I'm afraid I haven't come across it. Since the stock app works otherwise, my philosophy has been "why fix what isn't broken?" ;)

Sorry for such a long time for a reply. I actually forgot about this, haha. I still experience the issue. I have tried several different messaging apps just to see what I could find out. Tho some apps seem to work ok, it pains me to have to resort to using 3rd party apps to solve an issue that worked fine previously and now doesn't. I figured as much it is Android since others I know are starting to experience the same issue. Thanks for the reply and if by chance I discover a good fix, I will post it here.
