Help No USB connectivity / Device not recognized / not charging

Primergy

Lurker
All of a sudden my Optimus V wont do anything when connected to a computer USB port.
My wife has the very same phone and it behaves as it should!

  • Comes up as " device not recognized", no details about the phone as a USB device available (unknown device)
  • Nothing on the cellphone indicates a USB connection
  • The phone will not be charged. (Works fine on regular wall-charger)
Phone: 2.2.1 installed - nothing rooted, nothing touched. The only app that goes a tad deeper is Quick Settings.

PC: Tested on XP & Win7 64bit - same problems

ANY idea what causes this / what the remedy is?

Yes, I tried to research it before this post but did not find a solution besides driver install (which are installed by now).
Again, I can verify that everything works fine with a same-model phone!

That happened to me a few weeks ago. Since you didn't mention it having already tried it, I'd suggest re-booting the phone by powering off, then powering back on. I don't know why the problem happened, but a reboot worked for me and the problem has not reoccurred.

It sounds like you might have enabled usb debugging. Go to menu, applications, advanced, and make sure sure "usb debugging" is not checked.

Mh, I already played with that, no - the debugging mode enabled or disabled does not change a thing.

Changing USB cables was no help. As mentioned, the other phone (same model) works just fine on USB. Compared all settings as well.

Thanks for the try, but that was a tad too obvious

Not obvious enough to mention in your post, though! Sorry to hear you are still having problems.

More stuff:
Checked XP Device Manager to make sure you don't have any trouble indicators showing when the phone is attached?
Uninstalled a task manager and/or battery manager that could be killing a process necessary to make the USB connection?
Turned off the phone and pulled the battery before rebooting?
Factory reset the phone data?

I have the same problem. When I first got my Optimus V, I charged it via USB with the cable from my Intercept. Charged slow, but got USB recognition and was able to transfer files. Unfortunately, I sold that cable with the Intercept. When I used the LG supplied cable for the first time, I noticed that it charges a lot faster, but now USB mass storage recognition has gone out the proverbial window. I've tried it on all three of my Macs, my other Windows machine, and for kicks, I even bought another OEM Samsung Intercept cable off Ebay. Rebooted. Pulled the battery. Nada. Frustrating to say the least. I saw one glimmer of hope when I left it plugged in overnight about a week ago. When I woke up, the screen asked me if I wanted to turn USB mass storage on but I didn't have time to play around with it. I can't seem to replicate the conditions. It's a shame. It's the only real problem I've had with an otherwise awesome phone. Oh well. Let's keep each other posted.

FWIW: I have a Samsung Intercept on VM, and have USB problems. Interestingly, I don't have connectivity issues with a Compaq Presario V5000 and it's USB ports on WXP SP3, but I do have a problem with a Dell Precision M6400 high-end engineering laptop on WXP SP3.

It's been my experience that if I set USB Debugging ON, and if I use a USB1.1 port on my laptop (there are USB1.1 ports replicated on the USB keyboard and the LCD monitors I use with the M6400), then my connections are 100% reliable. Even when I'm powering up the laptop, before it gets to the WXP screen, I've already got a USB Connected icon in the notification tray.

So my first recommendation would be this: Try a different USB port on a Desktop machine... Perhaps the ones in the front vs. the ones in the back are different. Or try a USB1.1 port on a keyboard, LCD display, or USB1.1 hub.

Other options: download SwiFTP from the market, and FileZilla onto the PC from the web. Use FTP to move files back and forth over WiFi.

Another option, downloading MyPhoneExplorer from the Market onto the Phone, and the MyPhoneExplorer client for the PC from the web. You'll probably have to adjust your firewall settings for the phone to be recognized by the client.
HTH.

Edit: Today, I tried connecting to a USB2.0 port on the high-end laptop with Samsung's assistance. Before I did so, I made sure to turn USB Debugging OFF (as another poster mentioned earlier). All three selections on the Applications | Development screen should be UNCHECKED! Now then, I made sure to follow the proper process for connecting and disconnecting.

a). Connect Phone to PC. Pull down Notification Bar when you see the USB symbol in the Notification Area. Turn on the USB connection. Access the SD card with the drive letter created.

b). To Disconnect: Close the Explorer window you used for accessing the sdCard. On the phone, turn off the USB connection. Now using the icon in the system tray, disconnect the Smart Card Reader or the entry that references the drive letter you used.

Doing (a) and (b) above, I had a 3x success experience.
