Root Non-CM gingerbread ROM?

QuasiNerd

Newbie
I've been running xtrROM for a while now, and love it. But there's always that greener pastures thing...
I haven't tried any cyanogen ROMs yet, but thought that I read somewhere that they could have minor problems on the eris. Are there any gingerbread ROMs that aren't CM based?

Or am I totally misguided on this (which could very well be the case)?

Thanks!

Froyo roms were horrible for me but GB on CM7.x has been a dream. Not as fast as xtr but really close and really smooth. Close enough in speed where I don't feel the urge to go back.

GSB1.9 here.

just thot id point out tastybread is still a CM based rom. its ported to the eris from the CM nightlys for the cdma hero.

as far as the original post, there are minor issues with CM roms, but ive not found any of them to be enuff to not use them.

You still running TastyBread Scotty.

KaosGingerbread is a non-CM gingerbread ROM, but it hasn't been updated for months since the developer has been working on ROMs for other phones. It also has a lot of things that do not work.

Remember, the beauty of nandroid backups is that you can try new ROMs and if you don't like it, you can go back to how things were.

FWIW, KaosGingerbread is not CM based, but he hasn't worked on the ROM for a long time and it is still missing features. [Too slow on the update and metlcat beat me to this ...]

There are several issues that I know that people have with Cyanogen ROMs (CM5, 6 and 7). They are:

- undead call problem: the phone seems as if it is dropping a call, the instamtly reconnecting, but you find out when you talk to the other end that it was connected all of the time. Erisuser1 actually found out the cause of this problem. I know that GSB inclues the patch for it, and you can install on any other ROM

- GPS disconnecting after 20-30 minutes. Fixed in GSB, I think that this has not been fixed in any of the Froyo ROMs.

- Dial *228 and there is no keypad to press 1 (for activation) or 2 (for PRL update). But you can long-press the menu key to pop up the keyboard and press a number from there.

- There are often weird camera/gallery issues. Generally avoidable once you know the issues.

- When on speakerphone, when the phone's display goes to sleep, it will not easily wake. In every case you can wake the screen by holding Vol Up and pressing the Send key.

Those are the major ones that I can think of. Ar least on my phone, I get better battery life from the CM ROMs than I do with the stock and stock-based ROMs, like xtrSENSE and xtrROM.

Quasinerd, I'd make a Nandroid backup and then try out GSB. It's really a good ROM and it's interesting to see how vanilla Android runs compared with HTC's customizations. Just be careful to flash the Google apps zip file right after flashing GSB. If you create a Nandroid backup, you can always go back to what you have now.

Thanks everyone. I tried to hit the thanks button, but couldn't on my Eris :/
Guess it really is time for an upgrade.

Have you noticed LP force closing sometimes after reboot.

havent noticed that, but ive only rebooted a couple of times. did a reboot just now,and its fine. altho... i haVE 10% more battery after this reboot. sweet! lol :D

i do think that maybe after a couple days the smoothness may be slowly disapearing.yesterday i did use titanium to restore a bunch of missing apps+data, maybe thats the cause.

It's my understanding that it is exponentially more difficult to build 2.2+ ROMs if you don't rely on CM. That's why we see so many CM ROMs.

Having said that, I don't think it would be "impossible" for someone to build a non-CM GB ROM, I just think it's highly unlikely we'll see anything beside KaosGM.

FWIW, Workshed is taking steps now to join the CM Team. My hope is that once the DesireC (Eris) is officially added to CM's list of supported devices, we'll see resolution to some or many of the issues that Doogald mentioned above.

I've done it on my eris.;) Have you tried TastyBread 3.0 yet?:D

I've been having odd problems with my internet for a while now. It will randomly shut down for no apparent reason, and I have to select my desired search result twice before it will load.

I have not tried TastyBread yet. I will have to give that a shot.

Thanks.

Well you are lucky. I ran GSB for a couple of weeks and had much WORSE battery lafe than I do on xtrROM 5.0 I typically only got 20-30 hours between charges, depending on usage as compared to the 36-48 I have now. This is running all the same apps, widgets, and many of the same settings.

TastyBread hasn't been updated lately. I just flashed GSB 2.2.

Completely opposite for me. First, I have the 1750 mAh extended battery, though it's now about 15 months old so has lost some capacity. But, running things exactly the same way*, I get about 20-24 hours on a charge stock, about 24-30 with xtrROM and xtrSENSE, about 28-32 with Froyo ROMs and about 30-36 with GSB. It's definitely noticeable. For example, most days I end the day with 40%-60% battery capacity left on GSB, but the xtrs leave me with 20%-40%. I'd run xtrROM if I could count on getting battery when I need it - and the stupid HTC calendar alarms would work correctly.

* - not quite, of course. Stock is running stock clocking. With the xtrs, I run 604/245 with the screen on, 480/19 with the screen off. With Froyo and GSB, I run 604/245 all of the time. Otherwise, though, it's with Google accounts set to autosync, Tweetdeck set to update every 30 minutes, and then just typical use, which is mostly WiFi for internet access - I have terrible reception at home, and voice here is handled by a Verizon Network Extender - and then occasional browsing and app use, including several minutes an hour going through tweetdeck posts, and about 5-10 text messages a day.
