Root Non-voodoo to voodoo....making the switch?

I've had my SF since September, have been through ups and downs, and lefts and rights. Started out rooting and using voodoo. Tried out many kernels, roms, etc. Thought I borked it many many times, but somehow with the help of a lot of you out there, brought it back to life many times. I'm currently running DJ05 with JT's 11/11 non-voodoo kernel. I've tried all of geeknik's UV kernels as well. I use my phone for work and (as ugly as it may be) have to use the extended battery. Even with that battery, underclocking to 800 mhz, and debloating, I'm still struggling with battery life. I've been trying to do some reading and researching on voodoo kernels and some people say they can be better, the UV ones at least. Would you recommend making the switch to voodoo, especially since non-voodoo development has kind of halted? And if so, how difficult is it? From reading other threads, it looks too easy to be true. Any suggestions and ideas are appreciated and welcome....thanks!

As for the plunge thats more of a personal choice I don't usually advise 1 way or another. But for the ease part its just the same as flashing a non voodoo. So yes its easy just a little nerve rattling. And this voodoo is a lot easier to disable so it seems to be a whole lot better in that sense.

voodoo5 i significantly less risky and dangerous than the previous version of voodoo we had....and really the only danger is in flashing nonvoodoo kernels over it...but even that is any easy fix

my advice as always is...make sure you have the android sdk (and adb access) before messing with voodoo..im sure the vast majority of voodoo users dont have adb...but still, thats my advice :)

WOW 800Mhz underclock and the extended battery and still not enough .

Well the only thing I'd add is there are kernels now on the voodoo side with more undervolting than anything you have previously tried. Voodoo vs non makes no difference on battery life.
Sounds like you are just a power user. Today I killed the battery from 97 to less than 10% in just over 3 hours with a combo of GPS/Nav, ESPN Radio streaming through-out and playing games [Grave defense and lets golf 2 - with the espn still streaming behind]. Even I was a tad stunned how fast it went since this was with imnuts -150mv kernel. Just goes to show if you use it it goes. All things being equal the more you undervolt the longer it will live, but depending on use that might not net you a lot of gains

I just took the Voodoo off. I couldnt see the benefits from having it. My Quadrant was 1852 on last check today. I went back to non voodoo and it is now 932. But i do not see what the difference is other than that score. The phone and what i use runs just as smooth either way. Maybe if i was a developer?

So to not hurt myself with a silly mistake, i decided to remove it. Glad i learned how to do it though. maybe one day i will try again.

Depending on what you do with your phone you may be more or less likely to benefit from voodoo

Games, web browsing, market downloads come to mind as system write activites in which voodoo will clearly outperform rfs

In the past voodoo could be just viewed as a lagfix similar to oclf ....and most of the. "Press" surrounding it was the borked phones that resulted from bad flashes or uninstalls

Now voodoo5 is more of a complete system conversion....once its on tjeres no need to take it off....that's just the way its meant to be....an ext4 filesystem in place of rfs

And i wouldn't worry about quadrant scores....its about the least reliable benchmark out there

Ha yeah I just do a lot of talk, text, and email. I probably don't even need this phone but I love it! I went ahead and took the plunge....I flashed a voodoo5 kernel in rom manager. Saps, you seem to be a fan of the undervolted kernels...which ones would you recommend for a good combo of performance and battery? And where would they be found? I see a few in rom manager but I don't know anything about them. Thanks for the input guys!

I wouldn't use the ones in rom manager take a look here:

Well adrynalyne has a very noted 12/17 test 2 floating around here somewhere its moderately undervolted and a reliable candidate. However, the ultimate uv is found here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15246936/0106_imnuts_150_voodoo5.zip
its uv at -150mv at each and every step
if this is too much uv try adryn's http://androidforums.com/fascinate-...ies-out-there-super-low-volt-kernel-test.html

I'm getting ready to try out imnut's -150. I'll let you know how it works out after a day or so. Thanks!

Ive been on it a couple days now, must say Im not overly impressed with what I was anticipating would be extra battery life, not bad of course just dont seem to be getting more than other uv kernels

No luck here either. Been unplugged for 12 hours, only 8 min of phone calls, minimal text and email, extended battery, down to 37%. I'm not impressed. Gonna try something else tomorrow....

Do you use a brightness widget? Display is usually the biggest battery eater out there..

Yeah we are all thinking for some reason anything more than -100mv just does not take right. Im on an imnuts -100mv right now and its much better. So basically try that if you wanna ultra low volt Ghz kernel.
Keep it turned all the way down all the time actually. I'm starting to wonder if this beast of a battery is defective....
No probably not, that kernel wasnt quite right.
Haven't tried one of those yet myself. Are there any specific ones you'd recommend? Thanks!!
Try an app called screen filter. It allows you to go even dimmer than 0% brightness by default, its great for in the dark phone usage
I use one called brightness control, free in market. Just load as a widget then you have it right there, i always leave it all the way down unless Im in sun
Sounds similar to screen filter. I prefer putting something in my LP+ dock and just one clicking it than a widget myself but its a small bones difference
Loaded OTB test 5 ul 1200 tonight. Will see how it works tomorrow!
Yes OTB test5 is my fail safe kernel. It was the same proven -100mv at all steps 100-800Mhz just like imnuts and even exceeding adryn's. The 1200Mhz step is only -25mv but thats still something. Still keep trying to talking nem back into -50mv @ 1200Mhz like he did with OTB 1.1. Perhaps we can talk imnuts into it. My phone just runs better with more uv oddly enough. But test5 is a real winner. Great battery and the OC

with screen filter do you have a slider though? the slider is what sold me on it. I prefer to move it all the way down indoors, about 60% in direct sunlight, and about 35 when Im in a store with lots of windows (while Im following the wife around and bumping into stuff cuz Im to busy responding to ppl on AF;))

Yes absolutely

So the screen filter icon is the one in the bottom right corner. I click it and it engages at my preset. To adjust I bring my notification bar up/down and it gives me the top screen of these two. Mind you when it says 100% thats just what you set the screen default as in my case 0% brightness so the screen can get really dim if you turn it down low enough
