Root noob cant get rw access thru terminal emulator

hi everyone, first let me say that this forum is the best. I am a noob, I downloaded gingerbreak and rooted my optimus m. I downloaded busybox, it has have super user rights and through es file explorer I have checked the mount system as writable but that doesnt work. I am trying to flash the image recovery so I can hotrod my phone. i can delete bloatware through root uninstaller. I would really appreciate any help to get me over this hump. Thanks.

when you open terminal emulator do you type "su" and then enter before you do anything to allow superuser access?
