noob concerned Rooter - Froyo 2.2

I am seriously considering rooting the Mytouch3G original. Next month will be a year since I've had it. I've viewed the tutourial at Unlockr but wondering do I just install the generic ROM and the Froyo 2.2 ROM? What else can I download? Do I need to re-install all my apps or save them to another SDCard?
Sorry, I am a hands on learner and learn from watching because of a reading disability. I do not want to brick this thing? Just want to know what else to add or should I just add the two ROM above and over time add more?

Thanks. Rooted phone and went well. Think I need to SWAP my 16GB sdcard and reload all the apps to phone. What else can I do with the phone now that it has been rooted and Froyo 2.2 added?

You can overclock it, which is the ONLY reason I rooted mine. SetCPU, available in the market.
