i have been reading for most of the afternoon with no joy im no ever sure if it has been rooted???

Did you know it was in this state when you bought it? Normally I'd say take it straight back to the seller, but the wording of your post suggests you may have bought it knowing this, and gambling that it's fixable? Can you not ask the seller about the phone's history?

The seller can't tell you whether it was originally branded or not?

The white splash screen sounds unbranded, but it would also look like that if it had been debranded.

simfree? does it use sim cards? if not it's cdma, not gsm. Need to know the history of the phone as Hadron says

i mean sorry it is unlocked to any network all sim cards will work
as for the history this can not be found out as it was bought from a market and i cant talk to the owner

Have a look at the gold contacts of SIM.
Are they clean?
This HTC white screen you will get when you boot a factory resetted Desire without a SIM card (or the phone doesn't see the SIM).

Re. Shauny's suggestion: That's what I was thinking. If it is debranded rather than unbranded it will fail with a "cid error", and then we'll at least know that.

Frankly I don't think I want to know what sort of market sells non-functioning phones! I just hope for your sake it's legit, and really is SIM-unlocked, as I don't think you'll be able to tell that until it boots and tries to connect to a network.

Edit: Actually that's not quite true: if an unbranded RUU runs, then the phone is probably unlocked as well.

Also, just try harry's suggestion of cleaning SIM contacts. Only takes a second. Though if you knew the phone was like this to start with it's very unlikely to be that.

try installing htc sync, then uninstall it but not the driver it leaves behind. I've also got a bad feeling that as it was so cheap it's not a genuine htc usb cable.

i think you could be right as the lead is a little dogy meaning i have to play about with it i have just noticed to get it to charge
i will try and get one tomorrow its like a small usb lead the one end i have to move it about to get it to charge should the abmer light be on when its pluged in to the pc???

just bought a proper htc micro usb lead but when i run RUU still says usb error???
i cant change any setting in the phone i.e debug mode for usb
what now ??

Use a PB99IMG.ZIP instead. What RUU version are you using?

This is the same but a zip that runs from root of sd card. You boot into.hboot and it will flash it automatically
