Is the Eris's home screen supposed to rotate to landscape on the home screen ?

No. none of the screens actually rotate that I know of. Just the applications such as the browser and your twitter app and your email app and your messaging app, etc.

I noticed my homescreen rotates to landscape mode if I move it when I get a SMS popup.

Just my first HTC and Android device. Gotta say best one I've had, may keep it for more than 3-5 months.

maybe it does and i don't have it set, not sure. don't ever recall it going into landscape from the home screen though.
