I'm new and am trying to figure out exactly how to change my ui. I'm not sure if that's what the rom thing is or not... Anyone have some noob tutorial?

If u mean your launcher you don't need to use a custom rom. Try adw launcher from the market. If u mean your notification bar then you need too root and install recovery and then flash over a custom rom. Follow the tuts in the all things root section

I'm rooted, just having trouble with notification bar and button on bottom. I replaced my browser and want to change the shortcut down there

I think my problem is I don't have the recovery right. When I turn on the phone with home and volume down it doesn't open a recovery console, it just shows a little picture and reboots the phone like its new...

How did you flash the recovery??
You didn't flash it right because that is the stock recovery you are seeing.

1) download "TERMINAL EMULATOR" from the market.
2) download your flash image and recovery and place it on the root of your sd card (not in a folder) im assuming that you have these...if you dont i can send them to you.
3) make sure that the recovery file is named "recovery.img" and the flash image is named "flash_image"
4) open the terminal emlator and type "su" then press enter and terminal emulator will ask for root permissions...press yes.
5) then type this:

*press enter after every line

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system

cat /sdcard/flash_image > /system/bin/flash_image

chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image

mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak

mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock5 /system

flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

*at some point after one of the lines it will say something about the directory not being found...just disregard that and keep going.

now just boot into recovery (home+vol down+power) and you should be good to go.
