Root Noob Rooting Questions

felopez

Newbie
I just upgraded to a new HTC Rezound about a month ago now, and I quickly got tired of Verizon bloatware eating all my RAM and clogging up my phone. So I started looking up methods to get rid of all this crap on my phone.

Being new to Android, I've lurked for a while on various forums, reading all the topics on rooting my device, but none of them seem to cover what I want to do: Permanently root my device, keeping the stock OS, but uninstalling/freezing/killing all the bloatware.

Is there an easy way to do this, or?

-EDIT-

After re-reading scotty's guide and the other stickied topics in this forum, I realize I wasn't very clear.

Basically, what I'm looking for is an explanation of the steps - like, what is Amon RA? Do I need it if I'm just keeping the stock OS?

How do I root and keep the stock OS?

What does "flashing" mean?

I'm a cautious person, and I like to know everything I can before I try something like this.

amon RA is a custom recovery that you use to flash the root files,or custom roms,if you enjoy trying out new and different roms. flashing is simply "installing".

you will root and keep the stock OS by following the guide ;) just follow the directions in step 2 to temporarily flahs recovery. do not install it permanently.

you can use a root-only app called "titanium backup" to temporarily freeze the bloat that you dont want, then permanently delte it later when youre 100% sure it hasnt affected the safe, normal operation of your phone.

just make sure that you use the options in amon ra to make a backup of your completely stock, unmolested operating system before you flash the root files and start deleting bloatware. it will come in extremely handy if you ever need to return to stock.

Hey man, thanks for the quick reply.

Another quick question, though, when you say "unmolested," should I uninstall all the apps and such that I've installed so far and try to get my phone back to factory condition, or does that not matter?

And, I've heard that the rooting process would get rid of all the data on my phone like texts, contacts, pictures, etc. Is there a good way to back all that stuff up so I can restore it after I get root?

no need to uninstall your apps. just take it before flashing the root files,so you have an unrooted backup if you need it. you can always restore this backup, then do a factory reset if you want to wipe your data.

unfortunately,no way around that at this time... unlocking does a factory reset, wich will wipe your data.

everything on your sd card is safe,as is your contacts, calander, and anything you back up to google.

there are a couple different apps you can use to back up texts, and i think call logs,if those are important...

just search the market for sms backup :)
