Root Noob to rooting - some questions

Hi

Had my desire for a few months now, really loving the phone but the low memory issue is really becoming a problem now. Ive tried the unrooted method but it only saved me 20-30mb of space.

So ive decided im to take the plunge, ive read through quite a few threads on here to get an idea and have some questions. Hopefully having the info I need in 1 thread will help as well. Thanks for any help it really will be appriciated.

1) Backing up, which is better titanium backup or mybackp pro? will these backup and restore settings apps between roms? I have mybackup pro but it only seems to have 50mb online storage. Does appbrain allow me to easily redownload apps on a newly flashed rom?

2) If I change my mind about going back to stock unrooted is it easy enough to do and where/how can I do it? (Im vodafone UK branded 2.2) and does this replace the recovery with the original too?

3) Goldcard? I presume this is only need if I want to update software on a branded unrooted phone?

4) Protected apps, will I have a problem here or does it depend on the rom? Also do all the google apps need to be downloaded from the market now?

5) Roms, i've decided I want to try defrost as a vanilla rom, any suggestions for a basic sense rom with a2sd+. Do I have to flash roms from my pc or can I store them on my sd and flash from there. Id prefferably rather not flash a new radio as id rather not brick my phone.

Thats all I can think of at the moment, thanks :D

One step at a time. Make yourself a gold card before doing anything else, you'll need it if something goes wrong. If your flashing a vanilla rom like DeFrost they may suggest or you may NEED a new radio to make certain things work properly.

Back up using Titanium Pro. Your apps are connected to your google account not the phone so all of them are available for download again at no extra cost.

I don't know about the RUU rom's but I don't know why you'd want to go back.

If I were you I'd flash a noob friendly rom like Leedroid first, then after you've played with that a while flash you're vanilla.

Well I finally got round to making a goldcard tonight, sorry took so long to reply. After reading your post I thought that I needed more time so christmas wasnt the best idea :)

Im going to take your advice and try leedroid first, cant seem to find the latest 2.2 rom though (Im guessing it will be more stable than 2.3 atm)

Do I need to have my goldcard in the phone when rooting with unrevoked?

Leedroid 2.3 is based on android 2.2

As mentioned above the latest version of LeeDroid is 2.3d, which (confusingly) is based on android 2.2

I use mybackup pro to back up call logs, sms and dictionaries. All my calender events and contacts are google, so will re-sync automatically as soon as the phone is set up.

Titanium will backup all your apps (the free version is fine for this and is usually included on custom ROM's). The backup goes to your SD card so once the ROM is installed you run titanium and restore the apps. What I learnt after much trial and error (thanks again to SURoot) is to use the 'restore missing apps with data' option, and to check through the list to make sure you are only restoring your personal apps, not anything system or HTC as these can conflict with the settings on the new ROM and cause problems.

Best way to flash the ROM is to put it on the SD card and boot into recovery, then install the zip from there.

In the recovery menu, do a backup of your system before you do anything else.

Thanks guys have mybackup pro allready, is the nandroid backup stored on the sdcard?

Ill be backing up the sdcard first then will format and partition it.

It doesnt mention on the xda site anything about a new radio for 2.3d, my baseband is 5.11.05.27

You have the same radio as me - its taken me from stock to leedroid to gingervillain so far and I've not had any problems.

Nandroid backups are stored on SD card, yes, under clockworkmod-backup, so once you have done one you can back that up to your computer too.

Thanks appeciate your help, just going through the unrevoked process now. Does it matter where I put the rom zip file on the sdcard?

Edit: Hmm keep getting the error: Failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?

Im on 2.33.161.2

Edit (again!) Googled it, now rooted :)

Ok well I did a nandroid backup then rebooted from clockworkmod, now the phone is stuck in a bootloop with the htc logo?

Yeah, I think I had that too. From SUroot's FAQ thread:

**Note, there is a known issue whereby you can sometimes get into a bootloop after your first Nandroid backup if you rooted using unrEVOked 3.21 (or later) due to corruption of the NAND. Booting back into recovery and restoring the backup you have just taken should resolve this

Was easier than I thought wish id done it sooner now. Have around 30 apps installed and 112mb left! Thanks for your help.

Another couple of questions, sorry to be a pain :o

Am I right that Nandroid backs up an image of the whole system? So is it possible to have images of different roms to restore from rather than having to install it everytime?

Also, do titanium backups of app settings work accross roms (just the personal apps as barefootpilot suggested) So I can resore app settings saved from say leedroid to defrost or gingervillan?

In the top directory SDCARD, not in a sub-folder.
Actually I do put my ROM zips - indeed all zips - in subfolders.

I just use the "install zip from sd card" -> "select zip from sd card" in clockwork recovery, navigate to my folder/subfolder and select the zip I want. Means slightly more navigation, but keeps things tidy.
