Root noob trying to install new rom/kernel

i just got my esteem rooted, and i now i wanna install a new rom, however all the directions say is

"1.) Download the .zip & make sure 4g is enabled.
2.) Place zip in external sdcard
3.) Back up
4.) WIPE DATA!!! (You do not need to wipe if already on GingerSteem!)
5.) Go to install zip from sdcard
6.) Select GingerSteem1.0.zip
7.) Do not wipe data after flashing!!!
8.) Reboot!
9.) To Block Carrier Logging Requires Reboot After Initial Boot"


there are a couple problems one is i cant back up my phone for some reason with titanium bacup, two is that i dont know how to wipe data on my phone and three i dont have an external sd card. so am i just screwed from the get go? or is there some out there who can help me please realize the potential of this awesome phone

You need to flash Clockwork or RZR recovery. Follow this to do that Then you can reboot into recovery and the directions will make much more sense. Oh and you don't need an external sd. You can put it on your internal and flash it from there once in recovery. Soon as you flash the recovery reboot into recovery and make a back up before doing anything else.

Not trying to be a edit(doucher) but you need to read up on how to flash a rom a little bit more. First you need to do a CWM. Then when thats done you have to do a back up. THEN you can flash a ROM.

i have downloaded the CWM.zip and extracted the files, im just not sure what to do with it next

You don't have to extract the files by any means. All you have to do is download the .zip file and COPY it to your internal card In the phone and follow the instruction on how to flash it from CWR. Remember , don't extract the files , leave it as it is. CWR only accepts "file.zip" formats, so extracting it and moving to the phone cwr wouldn't be able to recognize the file because it isn't a .ZIP file.

Put your phone in debugging by going to settings/applications/development and checking the box next to debugging. Then hook the phone to the computer and pull down the status bar and tap the USB notification and then select internet mode. Then in that file just double click install cwr .

I still can get it to start in recovery mode... and i wouldent even know what to do next.....

i could really use live support if anyone has the time to help a noob learn a thing or two
