Not branded Desire splash screen

Hi all,
I have an 'stock' HTC desire (not branded by any operator) and I'd like to remove this awfull "HTC quietly brilliant" boot splash screen.
At least, removing the incredibly loud welcome sound that is definitly not "quiet" would be fine.
Untill today I was unable to find a way to do so and I need to know if it's possible without "rooting" my new phone.

"Silent Boot" is what you're after. Doesn't seem to work every time but most of the time gets rid of the loud start up noise.
