Root "... not enough space to install this item"

Newbie
OK, I'm stuck. I have a rooted, 1.3.0 NC. I keep getting the "Sorry, there's not enough space to install this item" error when I try to install or update an app. The NC Settings says that there is 892MB free of 1.00GB of the internal memory, and 3.76GB free on the SD card. I even tried uninstalling an app to free more space, but it still refuses. I'm afraid to do anything too drastic just yet. Please offer some suggestions to get around this problem. Hopefully, it isn't hardware related.

You might try fixing permissions from Rom Manager. O/W I've seen this in the past, and it resolved itself.

OK, I did that, and it reports:

Cache size 341
used 96
free 245

Data size 5211
used 1142
free 4069

system size 440
used 283
free 156

How do I interpret this?

For starts, your cache seems a bit full. You could boot into recovery (via Rom Manager), go into "mounts and storage" and "format cache", then back and go into "advanced menu" and "clear Dalvik cache", then back and restart. Your first reboot will take a couple minutes longer after clearing caches. :D

If your not comfortable with recovery you have these apps, which I have not used, so use with caution. I would just clear the cache, reboot and see if that helps.

Boy, this must be a tough one. I did as you suggested, it seemed to complete normally, but after a reboot, it still complains about not enough space.

More help, please?!??!

It reports:

I'll try to install the other two tools you suggested.

Some people resolved this by a factory reset, others by repartitioning it (changing the size of certain partitions).

Do you have a lot of books/movies/other large apps?

Was this a NC that came with B&N 1.3 preinstalled (ie. blue dot with new partition scheme)?

You might try this:

sometimes, something similar occurs when a previous installation didn't complete succesfully. what fixes that is deleting the file smdl2tmp1 (a temporary file created during installation).
using root explorer, you can usually find it in either of these two places:

- /sdcard/.android_secure
- /mnt/secure/asec/

after deleting the file, reboot and try downloading from market again.
Android_secure... you should be able to see when your NC is plugged into your computer's usb port.

re: .-2 I can't find smdl1tmp2 with Total Commander anywhere on the NC

re: .-1 It came with 1.2 but I updated it with 1.3

Did you move apps to the sdcard (apps2sd)?

Sorry, I'm running out of options that aren't factory reset.

Yes, I did try moving apps to the sd card with one of the Gemini tools. I have been suspicious of them all along. Could that have messed up the NC? I do have backups from before using them. Would a restore repair the problem?

OK, thanks for all the help. Still having the problem, but here is more information.

I reinstalled a backup set, and now freespace says

Cache size 341
used 47
free 293

Data size 5211
used 1123
free 4087

system size 440
used 283
free 156

But here is the interesting part -- I can install apps from the Amazon app store just fine, but I run into the out of space problem when trying to update or install a new app from the Android Market. Maybe it is corrupted? If so, how can I repair it?

If you were running CM7 I'd say go into settings... applications, find market and uninstall updates. I assume there's no Nook setup installed when you rooted?

I guess I don't have CM7, because the only settings I have are the original B&N ones. Even NookColor Tools and Nook Tweaks don't have an applications setting.

However, do you know of a site where I can reinstall the Market app itself, either directly from Aurora browser or sideloaded via the USB cable?

The only thing I can think of would be to root again or install Google Apps via recovery. You'd want to create a recovery backup first tho, in case it creates a worse problem.

If you want to try this....

Charge your Nook to 100%. The only risky part of this is flashing google apps. The other steps sometimes fix things. It's up to you.

Downloads:
Download gApps and copy to your sdcard.

Boot into recovery:
Open rom manager, tap the top button, you should get a superuser request, followed by a chance to pic your Nook Color (if you've never done this). Then tap the second button to boot into recovery.

Backup your rom:
Using the up/down volume to change select, "n" button to do the highlighted task and the power button to go back, choose "backup" in the backups menu. When done, hit the power button until you see "install zip from sdcard".

Flash gApps: (you could skip this step if you want to try everything else first)
Then highlight "install zip from sdcard" and press "n". Find your gapps file and install select it and press "n". When it's done. Press power until you see the above menu again with "advanced" menu.

Clean up some stuff:
From the advanced menu, clear "Dalvik cache" and "fix permissions".
From the "mounts and storage" menu, "format cache".

Then hit power until you see "reboot system now".

Your first boot will take longer b/c of deleting caches. Walk away for at least 5 minutes so you don't second doubt yourself.

It's been a while since I last posted, but here is some interesting information.

1. Only Android Market apps refused to load. Amazon app store apps installed fine.

2. I was using the Mozilla Aurora browser, and after installing the latest update, it was totally broken. I then unintalled it completely. (I now use Opera Mobile). Since then, I have not had any problems with installing any apps. I must conclude that Aurora somehow scrogged something.

3. While browsing around the file systems with Total Commander (Highly recommended!!) I find lots of places with large files, both on the internal filesystem and on the SD card. Are there any guides about what is safe to delete and what should not be touched?

Many thanks for all your help.

You might check out the Firefox Beta too.

There are apps that offer to clean up your temp files, which I linked to a couple above (post #6). That's probably safer than blindly deleting stuff. But the download folder and LOST.DIR folders should be safe. If you use Rom Manager to download stuff (which I doubt since you're stock), the download folders there can be purged.

I had a similar problem and found this thread, didn't really help me but i thought I would post my solution here anyways.

I wasn't able to add new music, apps or anything to my Android due to lack of space so I mounted it in a PC and show hidden folders/files and saw the .Trashed folder which contained 7.x GB of files I thought I had already removed (the full capacity of my phone is 8GB, and I did this on a PC since showing hidden folders on OSX takes more time for me). Just removed everything within and I was good to go. Didn't find a "Empty recycle bin" button anywhere on my phone, which would have been nice.

Sounds like your problem was caused by deleting from windows, which is why you don't see an "Empty trash" in Android. :D

I would think a good cleanup utility might be aware of this tho.

Holding down the Shift key when deleting will delete any file instead of sending to the trash.

I was getting the same error message. Could not get rid of this error even when I removed a significant portion of my apps. The system info always showed lots of room but the message continued. I think I have blundered on the solution. I have the Nook Tablet which was partitioned and then rooted. Many people have noted that NT comes with Netflix installed and that Google Play continuously wants to updated this app. It seems that if you update Netflix it confuses the system and Netflix is installed on the B&N Partition as well as the portion reserved for other apps. I un-installed Netflix update as well as any apps that come from B&N as well as Google Play so there are not duplicates. Seems to have worked. Worth a try.
