Help Not getting text notification while conversation open

When I'm texting someone and the screen is still on and on that conversation, there is no notification. If another text comes in while viewing a conversation it works. Also works fine if the screen is off. Anyone notice this? Know how to fix it?

While texting 1 person, I don't know when their text comes in without turning screen off or keep looking at screen.

I just hit the home button after sending/reading a text.
