Root Not happy with 2.3.3 - downgrade/root, what to do?

Hi guys

Newbie on the forum here - apologize in advance for any stupid questions.

As stated, I have upgraded my Desire to 2.3.3
I am not happy with this upgrade though, keep getting errors and lately my phone has decided to begin rebooting once in a while.

This is clearly not a viable situation, as this is my primary phone.

So my question is this: can I downgrade or root my way out of 2.3.3?

I am also quite tired of not having any space for apps - friends tell me that with rooting you can "trick" your phone into looking at part of the SD card as internal memory?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi
if was you I would root. I did it but just read and read.
Follow suroots guide and you wont go wrong. Guys a genius.
But just make sure you read a lot first

Hope it helps a little

Yeah, as Swampy says, read the FAQs (from the root forum sticky post "all about rooting"), read them a few times, then ask if anything isn't clear. They're a pretty friendly bunch in the root forum.

You should read the rooting FAQ and the root memory FAQ (which discusses "A2SD+", the trick with the SD card partition to increase app storage, as well as more advanced techniques).

Since you have upgraded, you'll need to use Revolutionary to root. There is documentation about this at that site, and a couple of threads in the root forum discuss how to use this. Otherwise things are as described in the FAQs.

In fact, even if you just wanted to downgrade to stock Froyo I suspect you might need to use revolutionary first - the official software utilities are upgrade utilities, so won't downgrade the phone, which means some fiddling would be needed before you could run one. It's possible, but as it's a similar amount of work to rooting, and won't solve your storage problems, I'd suggest investigating root first.

I spent quite some time over the weekend reading up on the do's and don'ts of flashing etc.

I found it quite hard to find good step-by-step directions for rooting a Desire with H-Boot 1.02 - but luckily I found exactly what I needet at The Unlockr:

How To Gain S-Off, Flash a Custom Recovery, and Root Your Android Phone Using the Revolutionary Method | TheUnlockr

Now I am in the process of trying out different ROMs.
I want to use a ROM with Sense, as I think this is one of the main features of the HTC Desire.

I am, however a little confused about a couple of things;

1) Am I correct that making a Ext-partition (of about 1 GB) on my SD-card is more or less essential?

2) What is all this "updating your Radio version" I keep reading about?

3) Any thoughts on what would be a good ROM choice for me?

I found 512mb enough, nore more than 1gb IIRC is recommended

2) What is all this "updating your Radio version" I keep reading about?
No need to flash radio, unless you have problems - LEAVE ALONE!

3) Any thoughts on what would be a good ROM choice for me?
Sense, AOSP or Miui are your choices, check out xda for your ROMS...

If you're wanting the help of the guys on here, you really need to be looking at the guide on here, You get no support following guides that the gurus on here have no control over. Follow the guide linked from SUroot, Hadron, Rastas etc,,, signatures then as for clarification, You'll get all the info and help you need.

If you want to use a2sd+ to increase your app storage you need an ext partition. It doesn't need to be that large if you just want to store some apps, but if you are interested in Sense 2.0 or later then yes, you'd want at least that size.

The reason is that the more recent Sense versions won't fit in the 250 MB system partition of the Desire, so these ROMs put part of the ROM in the ext partition instead, and hence a larger partition is needed.

You can do without ext with a small, non-Sense ROM (as I'm doing at the moment, though I still have the partition on my card), but as you said you were interested in Sense then I think you probably do want to do this.
2) What is all this "updating your Radio version" I keep reading about?
It's updating the firmware that controls the radio interfaces (GSM, 3G, bluetooth, WiFi). Don't worry about this unless you have a problem - it's something you should approach with a bit more care than flashing a ROM.
3) Any thoughts on what would be a good ROM choice for me?
Have a look through the "what ROM type are people using" thread.

I had a Desire 8181 with the official Gingerbread 2.3.3.

I rooted using the Revolutionary info yesterday and all went well. The videos are helpful although I had to work out for my self that once you get into Clockworkmod recovery, you navigate the menu using the Desire trackball. The advice I had was not to worry about the radio at all.
I installed Cyanogenmod7. Although not flashy, there is a ton of support out there. Discovered Google apps though has to be flashed separately - which gives access to market and lots more.

IF you have not rooted yet, am happy to help.
