Not Much Reason Not to Root

Frisco

=Luceat Lux Vestra=
In the back (or front) of many Fascinate user's minds is the question about OTAs and big upgrades (2.2, 2.3) coming out after they've rooted, especially if they've flashed a custom ROM, "Do I have to go back to stock?" "Should I just leave root and let a dev come out with an updated ROM?"

This little thread at XDA forums covers it directly and simply:

[Q] I rooted and installed a ROM, what to do if 2.2 or 2.3 comes out? - xda-developers

Unless a Fascinate owner has a need to get their device back to the store for an exchange or other reason, there's nothing to hold back from rooting and getting the most out of this great phone. :)

nice :) yeah that about sums up the numerous pm's i get specifically about what to do if 2.2 comes.

i usually go with the fact that the ota is more likely to brick your phone then by waiting a few hours for jt or others to throw up the first stock rom to upgrade :)

Hey, Frisco, so I might be going from my Eris(rooted with KF V38) to a Fascinate... is it easier or harder to root...It was quite easy to root on the Eris and the chance of bricking the phone was non-existent.. is it possible to do it on the SF?

its very, very hard to perma-brick a fascinate....in fact its almost impossibe now with revert radios for odin

Well that works!

Another question I had, I read reviews about this phone and they stated that the default search and browser search engine was Bing....any way to changed this to Google with rooting?

Just take a look at the three steps on this page, Familyguy1:

How to Root - Android Forums ;)

Just be sure to have debugging enabled in the application "development" menu, do NOT allow for moving files when prompted (just leave in charging mode), and of course have those drivers installed.

Not to mention the get it from jt et al crew is likely to get 2.2 before those waiting to the ota. Even, if no one chooses to release the 2.2 stuff until it goes official ota that process is usually slow and takes days. So even if we end up waiting till its official 95% of us will likely still get it fastest and first via the dev's.
I find it hard to imagine we will have to wait for it to be official though. Especially since we-know-who already has his hands on it ;) Gotta respect him for not getting anyone fired but somehow a window/door always seems to open up:D
