Help Not receiving calls when browsing on GPRS!

In short, when you're on 3G connection you're unable to send/receive texts, make/receive calls or use the internet.

No. When you're on 3G then you can make and receive calls and texts at the same time as a data connection is active.

On 2G (GPRS) then you can't have both a data connection and a voice/text connection, so if you are actively using the data connection and a call comes in, it will go direct to Voicemail.

There is a way around it - the networks ought to implement something that will automatically cut off your data connection if a call comes in. Problem is, they haven't, instead they are shouting about 3G coverage (which is poor whatever they say).

They should just get everywhere on 3G, problem solved.

:)

Okay then, got a replacement Desire....

Still the same problem, but had a word with an orange owner and they can browse on 2g and still receive calls, I'm thinking it's something to do with T-mobile said as an earlier poster mentioned. This is crap, I'm going to try and contact T-mobile and see if this can be investigated. I'm def. not happy about this as the way the phone works ie background downloading then I'm going to have to try to use apps which don't require a data connection or the very least connect rarely. WTF.

Just wanted to add my two penneth worth.

I currently have a Blackberry 8900 (56 days till Desire) and I have just tried this out at home.

Had a GPRS signal so went on to the internet. Whilst loading a page from the BBC website I got the missus to ring me and the phone rang as normal with no problems what so ever.

The 8900 is not 3G so Edge is the fastest I can get however this is not available in my house so it was 100% GPRS.

EDIT: Just seen this on Wiki:

Class B Can be connected to GPRS service and GSM service (voice, SMS), but using only one or the other at a given time. During GSM service (voice call or SMS), GPRS service is suspended, and then resumed automatically after the GSM service (voice call or SMS) has concluded. Most GPRS mobile devices are Class B.

From this i'd say that my 8900 is class B as it switched automatically, are we suggesting that the desire is class C which according to the same wiki page needs to be switched manually ?

Im going to watch this thread closely.

No offence, but will you just LISTEN? It is a limitation of the GPRS technology. The orange owner is mistaken or lying - I have the Desire on orange and if I'm actively downloading data on GPRS, my calls go straight to voicemail.

It could have finished downloading data, and the loading time that was left was the time it takes for the phone to render the data.

So please tell me how to test my 8900 in the same way as you tested your desire so that I can see if its the same or not ? (ie actively downloading data on GPRS)

Maybe i'll try to download an app (as this shows data transfer progress) and then get someone to call me.

That's one way of doing it, but with the Desire you can tell when it's downloading data because the down arrow appears in the status bar.

Well I've done another test using the Blackberry 8900, downloaded an app whilst connected via GPRS and as the status bar was increasing (showing 32kb /1200kb) I had my my mate ring me up. The phone automatically started ringing with no problems what so ever.

What this means regarding the desire I don't know but it certainly shows that not all phones act the same when receiving a call and browsing GPRS.

Matt,

I hope bully tests his BB sharpish because all this listening is starting to pi$$ a lot of people off

I am vindicated, thank you Bully.

Now less of GPRS limitations and on with what needs to be done to sort this problem out.

A fellow Desire owner on another forum rec'd this response to an email he sent to HTC

I questioned HTC about this and got this reply today:

"Thank you for contacting us. In regards to the 2G connection, We can confirm that 2G connection is the same all over the world and there are no phones that allow you to connect to the internet and receive calls or sms in the same time, unless the network force the internet to stop and let the calls come through. This is not a limitation of the phone but a limitation of the network that doesnt let the calls come through. This is a phone that if used in a 3G area will allow you to receive and make call while browsing the net. If used in a 2G area, like your case, will be up to the network wether you can or not connect to the internet and still getting calls or sms. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC."

Basically, as we thought, if you happen to have an active data connection working on 2G when someone tries to call, the call will go to voicemail. It *is* possible for T-Mobile to implement the system whereby the data connection is cut off when you receive a call, but they haven't and I think the chances of us getting them to do it is somewhere between nil and zero.

T-mobile are going to have a problem on their hands as more and more people pick up Smartphones which behave in the same way as the Desire.

Haha yes it is! Cheers! I think we should get HTC to apply some pressure on T-Mobile to allow calls to overide web browsing no matter what the signal strength...maybe on (and I hate to say it) facebook??

You know - I think what with me being about to start a new fight with T-Mobile regarding my son's Pulse (download unsuccessful error every month requiring a factory reset), I don't think I have the energy. I might just buy a

DISABLE auto update of date and time and check and set manually. Sync and download issues will be solved.

Well documented issue.

Doesn't work. Tried it, along with clearing Market cache, rebooting, signing in and out of Google Talk, etc. Been going on since December last year, have tried, quite literally, every single suggestion found on this and other forums and it still happens once per month with a factory reset being the only solution.

Alright, found out that Vodafone may be only network that has the ability to cut off data connections and push a call through to mobiles...

'If you are on Vodafone, who have implemented DTM, calls do take priority over data even if your device isn't DTM enabled (it will put the data connection on hold if a call comes through), so the short answer is, if you want any device to do as you want it to in your review, you need to be on Vodafone ...... I'm not sure if the Desire supports it but the only network in the UK that does is Vodafone. If you're not on Vodafone, no device (including even the overpriced iPhone) will allow you to do this.'

Bully - Just out of interest, what network are you on?
And can any Vodafone owners just do the test just to confirm the above statement.

Thank you

Guess what Jase...........Im on Vodafone. :D

When I get my Desire (in 55 days now) it will also be on Vodafone so id like any Vodafone Desire owners to see if a call will come through whilst they are connected to GPRS and downloading data.

i don't see it as a major problem as I wont be surfing the net a great deal but id like clarification either way.

Cheers Bully,

At least we're getting somewhere now, shame I'm stuck with T-Mobile for the next 24 months!!!

(just to check I thought it may be phone specific, tested my missus Nokia, same as you started a download from Nokia Ovi store, rang her and ..... answermachine, hers is T-moble too)

Arse.

So after swapping out your phone and a lot of research, you've found out..... what we all told you in the first place? :D

Why not use 3g instead?

And on earth sign up for a 24 month contract?

No Matt, after a lot of research I found out that phones on Vodafone are DTM enabled and behave as phones should essentially behave.

What you did was regurgitate the word limitations and after your first few posts were about as useful as Sky Customer Services.
