(Not so) Incredible ranking in battery life

it's not so shocking the incredible lost this test.

1) incredible has the smallest battery in test.
2) lcd has lower battery consumption than amoled. all the phones with amoled were at the bottom, all the phones with lcd were at the top.

there is a trade-off. better screen with lesser battery or lesser screen quality for more battery?

and obviously we can mitigate battery issues with the extensive choice of available extended batteries.
 
It's a bad comparison/review because most people have purchased a 1500 mah for their Incredible. Many for between $15-$20.

The whole power consumption AMOLED vs LCD confuses me to no end. I thought one of the biggest perks for any AMOLED screen is the power issue since they don't require backlights. I do agree that AMOLED screens have better quality though.

It does: HOWEVER: The entire test linked just used a single web page, that is mostly white. The one place AMOLED loses out on is white. If it had been a more normal color AMOLED would have been better, and if it was dark colors like blacks, AMOLED would have really shined.

Everyone needs to remember: The phone itself is probably the smallest variable in battery life. ( Short of going all the way down to a media or feature phone that is ). The big ones being Usage, any current bugs, and <gasp> Battery size! I wouldn't be surprised if an Inc running a 1500 under typical usage with a black background lasted longer than a DX.

As for the 2.2 getting way better battery life: The main culprit is probably the JIT compiler. Because it is so much more efficient, requiring about 1/4 to 1/5 of the processing ( The way you make something 4-5 times faster is decrease how much processing it takes... ), means the INC can underclock itself a lot more.

PS: I've seen it in the main articles comments already, and I'm sure it'll pop up here again like it always does: The charge with power off is not a bug, it is normal due to the way a Li-Ion battery is charged. Any "fix" would just fudge the top percents of the battery indicator a little more than they do.
 
That chart is full of horrible data. You can't accurately compare several devices when some have newer hardware, larger batteries and better optimized OS.

Why not? Those specs differences represent how you actually buy the devices!

I agree. The tests confirm what we all already know...the one achiles heel for the Dinc is its battery.

That said, it puzzles me that this is even an issue. Why don't these manufacturers include MINIMUM 2000 mah batteries as standard? Its not that hard to comprehend.

Smart phones do more than regular phones and have more features...THIS DRAINS BATTERIES.

From an engineering standpoint...just look at the batteries and look at the form factor of the phones they are going in. They could EASILY make the batteries 25% longer and keep the thickness the same to make a 1500 mah battery 2000 mah and it could still easily fit the form factor.

Even they need to make some components smaller (which could drive up costs)...I would be willing to bet that most people would gladly pay the extra $50 - $60 for a much better battery out of the box.

Instead we are forced to

-Buy extra batteries, car chargers, etc

-Have these lengthy discussions on turning off task killers, push email, bluetooth, wifi, etc...when we should be talking about doing stuff with them :).

I currently have two phones. The Dinc and an old LG flip phone for work. My LG flip phone has a 1100 mah battery and literally lasts me about 12 -14 days, if I don't talk on it.

Why can't I get a smartphone that lasts 3 days if I do the same thing? God forbid if I actually use it...then I'm down to looking for a charger just to get by for the rest of the day.

Sometimes people have time to kill and it would be nice to use your phone to keep you occupied.

Example:
I'm at the airport and I have a 3 hour layover.

I want to be able to watch a movie, surf the web and talk on the phone during that time WITHOUT have to worry that my battery will be dead when I arrive and I can't coordinate my pickup at the airport. Instead I'm reduced to watching a little bit of a movie, surfing the web a little, twiddling my thumbs the rest of the time and hoping I have enough battery left for when I arrive.

Well, as several people have posted the test doesn't really "confirm" much, besides that if you bounce between mostly white webpages certain phones will last longer. That was the entire test: Open a webpage and stare at it for 60 seconds. Close and open a new one. Rinse and repeat. Clearly...laptop blog/mags should stick to laptops.

Now, I'm not going to argue the details on why batteries are the size they are ( though I do agree the Inc should have come with a 1500 ), but I really wanted to point out how wrong you are about the extra 50-60 dollars. You really think if they had the Incredible at $260 and the Droid X at $200 that people would be OK with that? Even if the Inc had 33% more battery? Many people would be deterred by a FIVE dollar difference.

Also: The Inc will last over 4 days if not used. However, is it a flip phone? No.

The Incredible has mediocre battery life. Not good, and not bad. It should have come with a 1500, and hurts a bit due to a 1300. The 1300 however suffices for the vast majority ( of which this forum contains a severe bias towards the "hardcore" users. )

Are the tests entirely fair...of course not. Do the tests confirm what we already know? That the DInc battery is subpar...yes, it does. Thats why there are so many people buy the 1750 and 1500, 2150....because the 1300 mah is not adequate.

My DInc will be down to about 40- 50% in about 10 hours of no use...there is no way it would make it 4 days. And I don't have wifi, bluetooth or anything crazy installed or running. And BTW, I'm using a OEM 1500 mah.

If they all included better batteries... and cost $50 more (which is WAY more than what it would actually cost to fix this battery issue...heck 1 Ghz CPU processors cost less than $25)...do you really think that would make much of a difference?

All I'm saying is that this battery problem amongst smart phones is rediculous. Either have a slim phone and have battery problems or get the extended battery and have a brick. There is no in between.

My point was that the tests are so significantly stacked, as to be useless at proving anything. What is a better judge of the Incs battery being subpar, is that it has a 1300 vs 1500 battery. The test itself is so far out there to as to be useless as a phone test.

If you are losing 50% battery in 10 hours of no use at all, you really need to check some of the battery help threads, because you have a MAJOR problem ( and it's not the phone ). With no use on an Inc getting 2-4% "Time without a Signal" and a 30 min phone call..I was a couple hours shy of 4 days. You should be getting in the 4-6 hours of actual usage time.

Agreed...and in fact: There IS massive work on battery technology. Prop open a 5 year old phone and you'll usually find a 750 mah battery. 10 years ago we were using 300 mah batteries. Before that...battery technology moved along pretty slowly ( Just think about RC cars from 10 years ago, compared to 20 years ago...pretty identically horrible battery life. )

However, it just isn't fast enough. The speed and power of mobile devices is out-pacing the batteries that power them. ( Kinda makes you wonder if that's part of why the sudden surge of larger mobile devices, after so long of it always being smaller and smaller. )

Better techniques of miniaturizing components doesn't really help, because they just cram more stuff in there. End result is, the battery ends up being the same physical size, so the only increase in capacity would have to come from improved density.

The best thing I can think of personally that would help, is for manufacturers to stop trying to bury the battery into the phone itself. Extend the battery to the full length of the phone or so (Obviously something would need to be done with the main camera.), and try to make it thin. While this wouldn't change stock batteries: It would allow for extended batteries that aren't quite as thick.

Also, as you mention: The latest in phones, should be carrying the latest in battery tech. 1500 mah was last gens battery: I think the DX, D2 and Inc all could have fit 1600s in without any size increase at all.

I actually decided to look into the DX forums and read some of the stuff about their battery life. Color me shocked.

It sounded a lot like a repeat of the Incredible. "I get 2 days of heavy usage" and "I only get 6 hours of light usage". There were former Inc owners claiming everything from worse to 3 times better battery.

About the only thing I could discern from it ( real shocker here ) is the DXs screen eats way more battery. In fact, while most Inc users see something like 10% of their battery eaten by the display, DX owners are seeing in the 80s. It also appears the DXs radios use far less. (This is surely partly just from the fact that the display is hogging so much for itself, but in comparison to the system as well, it appears their radios might be using a bit less.) If I had to guess, these 2 things are what is causing the variance. A given user might use his DX and Inc pretty much the same: but compared to another user, he might use the radio more or the screen more.

Once again, it really boils down to: The user. How each given person uses it is going to be the major discerning factor. Ironically enough, it looks like if you want to watch videos/play games/ things that use the screen, go Inc. If you talk on your phone a lot, and have a lot of stuff in the background, use DX, lol. Either way, you're running Android, so it's Win/Win.

There's a disconnect here, and I tjink I know what it is. You have two camps: battery sucks, and battery's fine. One group were early adopters, and the other wasn't. "Oh, I do all this crazy stuff with my phone and it lasts all day.", "I use it averageand the battery sucks". The battery problems for early adopters is well documented.

Yea, I agree. Unfortunately, I think there has been a brick wall hit with battery tech now. Lith Ion/Polymer...seems to be the best they can do for now. I haven't heard of anything promising lately and I think fuel cells are still a ways off.

I think thats a great idea. It would be a throwback to the old motorola flip phones...where the back was the battery.

Chart schmart. My battery has definitely increased over time. I'm still running stock, and with normal use I usually put it on the charge at night with half or a little less than half left. It didn't start out that way, but after normal charging cycles it's perfectly fine for me. :) I'm glad I didn't fork out the extra for an extended battery.

If I know I'm going to be using heavy, I'll just bump charge in the morning. But otherwise, normal overnight charge and I'm good to go.

No, not really. I got my Inc the day before official release. Me and a lot of people that got theirs at that time also had adequate battery life. From day 1 we saw the extreme split of "horrible" and "great" battery life.

I've been staying out of the battery threads (because it's a no win argument) but I gotta go with Zemerick on this one... I got my Inc on April 28, and out of the box it was an improvement over the HTC Touch Pro it replaced. 24 hours was never a problem. With the tweaks I've done, it's now over 50 hours.

Of course, this is completely meaningless, since you have no idea how I use my phone any more than I know how you use yours (your idea of "light to moderate" may equate to my idea of "heavy"). There are too many other factors that can explain the wide range of battery life on these phones, and they will be different for every single user.

One thing I think isn't mentioned enough is the apps that people install. With the opensourceness(?) of the Android OS, there are honestly a lot of inefficiently written apps out there, apps that might be "doing something" even when apparently not in use. I'm on the conservative side, having installed less than 20 apps from the Market, and mostly from very trusted developers. Some of you have hundreds of apps from what I've read.
