Help Note 2 slowing down, lag, freezing

It was running excellent for about 6 weeks, but lately my Note 2 has been acting strange. I haven't had the very latest update, so it isn't that, and I have 5+GB free of internal storage and 10GB free on my memory card, so it isn't full. But sometimes i'll be in apps and it will take ages from when i push the home button to actually going to my home screen. Or the last couple of days the capacitive buttons stopped working, i couldn't get the multitasking panel open to close apps, i had to reboot it. Last night i had to reboot it because it froze.

For such a powerful phone such performance obviously isn't right. I don't know if it's a rogue app, part of me thinks it may be the Facebook app since the latest updates - has anyone else noticed?

I don't have that phone but at one time I should have that problem. It was the Facebook app that caused me problems. I suggest uninstalling the app than reboot . If the problem is still there work backwards from most recently installed app to find problem.

The only reason i haven't uninstalled it already is because it syncs some contacts, and i really don't want to have to go through and join them all up again if i don't have to

I advise restarting your phone in safe mode and running it for a day or so like that. If it doesn't freeze in safe mode you know it's a third party app causing the problem.

I cut and paste this from the Quick Links thread:

You can start your Samsung Galaxy Note in Safe Mode to boot into Android with a default set of software. This mode is used in the event when an app has been loaded onto the phone that causes it to no longer start or function correctly. Booting in Safe Mode allows you access to start the device properly and remove the app or fix the setting that caused the problem.

1. Power the Galaxy Note off.

2. Press and hold the Power button to turn the device on.

3. Once you see the animation on the screen, continuously tap the Menu button. (Button with 3 lines below the screen)

Once the device loads the Android OS, you should see the words “Safe Mode” appear in the lower-left corner of the home screen. You may have to unlock the screen to see these words. If you don’t see them, turn the Galaxy Note off and try again.

When you are finished with Safe Mode, you can press and hold the Power button, then tap Power off. You can then power on the device as normal.

You can use any apps in safe mode that are available in safe mode. And if it doesn't cause you the problem that you were having that means the problem is caused by a third-party app (which will Not be available in safe mode).

Facebook is working in safe mode though...

Well it may not be Facebook causing the problem. I'd use it for a day or so in safe mode and if it works fine the good news is that it is probably not a hardware problem that is causing your lag.

Well there is some slight lag already. Nothing major, but bringing up the task manager is a little slow. My concern with Facebook working in safe mode is that if it is the culprit, i won't be able to tell

Is it normal for so much RAM to be used too? When i go to application manager it's usually using at least 3/4

I been having this exact same problem. I just got the N2 about 3 weeks ago and it lags or freezes just about everyday. I shutdown and restart and it runs fine, but this just sucks. I love the size of the N2 but i'm starting to miss my iPhone 5 that I gave to my wife so that I could "upgrade". IMHO, stuff like this should not even be happening, especially to a new device.

Yeah the iphone is very smooth and reliable but the tradeoff is how simple it is, Android does much more.

Do you have Facebook installed? Maybe we have the same cause

yes i do have Facebook installed. It did freeze up while on FB, but also while on other apps too, even some games like slotomania too. I hate that we have to "do this, then do that and that" to get it to run smoothly. Spending more time fixing it than enjoying the "best of the best".

It's not that it freezes during that app that I've noticed, more if it's running in the background. It seems to be a common complaint in the reviews of Facebook. Mine has only frozen a couple of times but it lags quite frequently. The fact it does it intermittently suggests to me it is an app

I had the same problem with the Facebook app. It seems to use an awful lot of system resources in the background. After removal, the phone runs like a champ.

Ah...
Even though I suspected it, I was hoping it wasn't the cause. I use the chat frequently and the contact sync.
Do you just not use facebook on the phone anymore?

Rich, just out of curiosity are you running your phone with Power Saving Mode turned on? I know that if I do then my phone will sometimes lag depending on what I'm running. Also, are you using a Live Wallpaper? I know that they aren't supposed to make the phone laggy but I still feel that they sometimes do cause lag.

I don't use power saving mode but i do use live wallpaper. Actually i was using the bubbles one until yesterday afternoon, then i switched to photo wall and it's been ok since...

Yeah, I'd try it a day or so with a still wallpaper and see if it lags or not. The Live wallpapers do look nice but even still I get bored of them too and I don't want to use them if there's even a remote chance they will cause my phone to slow down or lag.

I never used them in the past for that reason, but the battery life on the Note 2 has been so good and there's so much power under the hood that i went with it. Haven't noticed any change in battery but yeah, if the lagging is caused by the wallpaper then i will go back to static

Yeah, I have to admit that I love the battery life of my Note 2 and I do use things and have certain settings that I wouldn't normally have on my phone such as keeping my brightness near 100% for most of the time except at night. I'd never dream of doing that with any of my other phones. :p
