I have the same issue as Dan330. I have the Kit Kat update - on Rogers in Canada. As soon as you touch the slider, the auto box is unchecked. And yes, the video definitely shows numbers on the slider. Using Nova Launcher - unsure if this has anything to do with it, although there are no settings within Nova to change this. Don't know what the answer is......
 
I find my Note 3 usable and better than any other display in sun. This includes Nixon, Fiji, and Sony cameras. Nothing but eInk seems better but that technology has speed and color limitations.

4.3, Nova launcher. Use the S Pen. Touch the slider spot. It'll get larger. Then move it. Auto stays checked.

Unless it's carrier-specific (mine's AT&T) or there are different bugs in different builds?
 
I'm on 4.4.2 Yes, touching the slider with the stylus makes the adjustment spot larger, but it still unchecks the auto brightness as soon as you touch the slider. Appreciate the help. I'm seriously thinking that it worked BEFORE the 4.4.2 update. Memory is fuzzy at the best of times though.....
 
before and after the 4.4.2 update.. same for me on ATT NOTE3. no numbers and it unchecks as soon as I touch the slider
