Notification bar updates message?

Newbie
Hi. I'm newbie with android. I have a HTC desire, it works with 2.2. When i get online, there comes that there are updates available. I do not know what to do. To take those updates or not? I do not know what happens after the updates, will the system change, will anything loose, and the most important will the phone work again :)
Please help me. Thanks.

I think you may find they are just market updates for your apps.

Go to the market and click on the My Apps tab to see what updates are available.

They could also be system updates. I'm on 2.2 but my phone regularly tells me about something like 2.2.405.5 but as I debranded my (Orange) handset some time ago the update fails to install, so I ignore it.

Either way it wont wipe your phone if its a system update. Your not rooted?
No it is not rooted. I didn't make any change on the phone, it's as it comes from china. They are system updates, so you are saying it will not demage my system?
Thank you very much for the help.

No they won't as they're system updates - just like updates for Windows. Click on the notification and see what it tells you

if they are system updates, they will update the system but will not change your settings or delete your data.
But I think the updates in the notification bar are mostly for market apps, what I do is check what is new in the update, and update if I think it's necessary. Even those won't delete your data and settings

If you are trying to accept a system update on a de-branded handset, make sure you have an SD card that has been gold-carded before you update. Some peeps have had problems with their phones by accepting an unbranded OTA update on a de-branded phone.
