Help Notification Sounds - Can they be Turned OFF?

r20

Newbie
Is it possible to set the Notification Sound(s) to OFF? I have Yahoo Mail and the cacophony of dings and chimes is seemingly endless. I don't want to use the Silent sound profile as I need to hear the phone ring for calls.

There should be a setting within Yahoo Mail to turn off the notification. Or go into the ring settings in Yahoo and set it to Silent.

Hmm, Yahoo Mail 1.3.10 does not appear to have ring settings nor the ability to turn the notifications off.

If I rooted the phone would I be able to control the notifications?

If there is no option in the mail program itself then rooting wouldn't solve it either. I'm surpised there is no option though. I've never seen a mail program with no option for notification sounds.

Interesting. My old Samsung Captivate never sounded off the way that this HTC Wildfire does now. Not only does it ding for new Yahoo emails but it speaks up for low battery, app updates and others that I have yet to identify. Am I alone in wanting NONE of these sounds? Just the ringer, please!

Did you go into the Settings from the app drawer and check there? If you want just the ringer then there should be a way for that. Or go to the Market (Play) and download Volume Control + which allows you to turn the volume to zero for notifications.

N00b Q here: Where is the App "drawer"? I have been going to All apps > Settings > Sound > Notifications > Notification sound.

Thank you for sharing Volume Control + (from Coffeebreak Apps, right?). I'm instaling it now and will see how it works.

The app drawer is the same as All Apps. I've just always called it a drawer because it pulls open like a drawer. :)

Yup, you have the right one. Let me know how that works for you.

With Volume Control + the settings for Ring and Notification appear to be "linked" - e.g. if I mute Notification the Ring volume is also muted (or at the lowest setting). If I enable Ring then Notify is also enabled (turned On). There seems to be no way to un-link the two.

What about going to Notification Sound - then choosing silent? If that doesn't work then I don't know how to fix it.

In the Wildfire S's Sound settings (Notifications) there is no "Silent" (oh, how I wish that there was!). Unless there is an option under "Get more" which links to HTC Sense, which is apparently being rebuilt or something...

With VC+, when I silence Notification the Ring gets silenced as well, which is not what I want.

I'll see if I can find any other work around. This is the first time that I've heard of a phone not having 'silent' as an option. Sorry.

If you go to Personalise/Notification sound, you can choose different sounds for Messages, Calendar and Email. Then you can choose the quietest one if you want. I don't think there is a silent one but you can try them all and download more should you want to.

If you go to Personalise/Notification Sound...

I do not see Personalise/Notification Sound on my Wildfire S but I have been sampling all of the available tones. Pity that the Notification sound cannot be "de-linked" from the Ringer.

Personalise is the bottom right-hand side key on the Home screen just above the Search soft key. It looks like a paintbrush and palette. You can also get to it by pressing the Menu button. It's then just above the settings key.

If you tap it is will open a menu and the Notification sound near the bottom menu is second from the bottom. You can then choose different sounds for Default, Message, Calendar and Email.
