Help Nova Launcher issue

I spent most of the night putting widgets on my 2014 Note tablet. Everything was lookig good, just the way I wanted to look. But one particular widget I downloaded didn't seem to be on the list. So I restarted the tablet. When I did, all the widgets were gone. Anyone know what the heck happened here?
 
My bad. It was Apex Launcher that I had. So I set up 5-6 more widgets, rebooted, and they were gone again. So I deleted Apex and went to Nova. Installed the widgets, rebooted, and everything was still there.

Apex was the problem. I don't have the answers.
 
Ok. So I've had Nova launch for about a week now. I noticed it crashes every other day (Nova not responding). I reboot and everything seems OK. But then as the day goes by, the thing lags between screen swipes. It's nothing that a reboot won't solve, but it's still annoying. Has anyone else experience this?

Anyone know what causes this? Is it the amount of widgets I have? Certain apps running?

I emailed the developer to see if they can help.
