Help Nova Prime crashes often on my GN3

I started using Nova Prime on my GS3 and was naturally fully expecting to enjoy it on my Note 3. However, I'm noticing that the launcher app crashes frequently, which is kinda annoying...when it does, I have to hit Home and re-establish it as my default launcher. I'm also noticing that one or more of my widgets will frequently crash, requiring me to go into Nova Settings/Advanced to restart the launcher to get the widgets back. Anyone else have this problem with their Notes? Nova has always been rock solid but I'm wondering if there are issues with Android 4.3? I will probably try uninstalling and reinstalling, but the app appears to work fine otherwise so I doubt this will do anything. I also own Apex but would like to stick to Nova if I could. Thanks all!

There are tons of people that use Nova on the N3 without issues. It's more likely one of your widgets causing the problem.

I am on Nova Prime as well having used it on my last phone like you. It has been rock solid for me. I cannot think of a single crash with it so far. Maybe once, but nothing that sticks out in my memory which means if it did crash it was likely because I was doing something weird with the phone so I didn't assign the fault to Nova. I've had it on the phone since day one - actually this is my second GN3 since I returned the first one. Mine has been very solid.

Yours must be reacting with something it doesn't like, app wise or phone setting wise. It's always so frustrating to try to figure out these conflicts. Good luck. Maybe try the reinstall and if it still crashes then a factor reset and build from scratch slowing putting on apps and watching for the conflict. I'm thinking about doing this to my GN3 to isolate a couple other issues I'm noting on mine that are not Nova related.

Which 'Nova widgets' are you using? I am not using any of Nova's widgets but I do use the gestures quite a bit.

Nova has been even smoother on the Note 3 than I experienced on the Note 2. And it didn't stutter much on the Note 2 at all, until after several months.

What kind of "crash" are we talking about? To the point that the notification comes up for you to report to the developer or cancel?

Uninstall your non-stock widgets before you do a factory reset. Seems a little drastic to wipe it before you find out if it's just a widget or not.

I'd uninstall Nova and re install it first.

Have you got any really dodgy apps, or apps from non standard sources? Just disable them for the time being.

I don't use any Nova widgets (I didn't know there were any), but I do use a number of what I guess could be called "non-stock" widgets (i.e., non-Samsung)...for example, I use the MobiMail calendar widget, and I use several of the Android Pro Widgets for contacts, bookmarks, and Facebook. When it crashes, the behavior is as follows: screen freezes for a second or two, then goes dark, then I get a force close message ("Unfortunately Nova Launcher has stopped..."). It always restarts immediately on its own, but I have to re-establish the default home button.

If it's a widget causing the issue, I'd suspect the MobiMail one as it's the only new one that I'm using that I didn't use on my GS3. I'm going to uninstall and reinstall Nova and I'll check back...thanks for the help!

Also consider that those widgets that work fine on your GS3 aren't running on Android 4.3.

Question on this for me. Using Nova and today one of my widgets is gone and says "Tap to restore widget". And since I spent the weekend moving everything around on my phone, I cannot remember which widget it is.

When I tap it, nothing happens. When I go into Nova and restart, the widget does not appear. How can I tell what it was?

I've had this happen to me too many times...usually restarting Nova works for me, or a phone restart if it doesn't. If you've already tried that, you may be SOL unless someone else has something...sorry. As a previous poster has said, I don't think it's the Note per se, rather Android 4.3 not playing well with all widgets.

Once you get your Nova Prime launcher setup the way you like it create a backup. Tap on Settings button then choose Nova settings. Scroll down to Backup and restore and choose backup. Name it something you can remember it by and save it. That way you can always go back to a state where things were working right for you.

It's definitely not Android Pro Widgets. I use the People, Bookmarks, and Calendar/Agenda Widget. My suspicion would be MobiMail, if that's the only other widget you're using.

I definitely use a lot of widgets...I love 'em. One of the problems with most launchers is if it's having a problem with one or more widgets, it won't tell you which one. People will always suggest removing the widgets and adding them back one at a time, but not only is that a PITA if you have a lot of widgets, it's not like the launcher will automatically crash...it's very sporadic, so unless you have many hours to constantly test you won't catch the problem widget unless you're lucky. Not really worth it...having to restart Nova now and them is only a minor inconvenience.

Thread can be closed, I was just looking for some good ideas that I might not have heard before.

The beauty of most launchers that I've used is, the backup system is actually quite good at re-loading the widgets, as long as you have all of your past widget applications installed. Whenever I've had an issue in the past, I've uninstalled the launcher and just used the restore function. It saves me a lot of time and actually helped me in my transition from the Note 2 to the Note 3. I just had to be sure that I had all my settings for those widgets transferred over.
