Root Now rooted. Backups vs Shipped ROM

Lurker
I created a gold card before rooting. Next, I finished the rooting process on my CDMA Desire. The first thing I did was create a full backup from the recovery menu and copied it to my pc. After that, I made a second backup of my apps using Titanium and copied that to my pc as well. Finally, I copied my entire sd card to my pc for another form of backup.

My question is, since there is not a shipped ROM I am aware of for my devise (1.27.671.0 on Alltel network) can I revert back to my current ROM on my phone using the Recovery menu and the backups I have created if I encounter any problems?

Thanks

Yes - restoring from that nandroid will put your current ROM back. It will also restore all apps/data/settings as they were when you took the backup.

If you want to restore more recent apps and data, take a titanium backup before restoring the nandroid, then after the nandroid restore use titanium to restore the apps and data you want. Do not restore system settings when changing between ROMs though.

If you just hit a problem (e.g. flash a rom and it doesn't work), then simply restore from the nandroid. I always take a nandroid before flashing anything, so that I can revert back to where I was if something messes up.

Note that the nandroid will not unroot your phone - good for our purposes, but if you want to unroot (e.g. for a warranty return) you need to find an RUU for your phone/network.

Thanks for the replies. This is exactly what I was looking for and makes me feel much less uneasy about flashing now.

Also, a friend of mine recommends using ROM Manager from the marketplace to find ROMs for our phones. Stating that it will only display ROMs that are compatible with cdma and our radio versions.

Does anyone have experience using rom manager and is it worth the price?
thanks again

Don't use it myself - I prefer to backup and flash manually from recovery.

It's easy to find ROMs at XDA (Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [UPDATED: 26/12] [PaYS MultiLingual MIUI] - xda-developers) - easier for me as mine is a GSM Desire, but there are some CDMA ROMs linked from that post as well.

If ROM manager does the selection of compatible ROMs right that might actually be a good use for it, but I can't comment on how well it does that. I'd always do a little reading about a ROM before flashing anyway, so would want to check the relevant XDA thread in any case.

Xda developers forum is the best place for roms. Rom manager is easy to use but I prefer people to do it all manually so they read up on everything properly and respect the process

After doing a bit more research, I agree that manual install is the way to go. One other question: After I flash, do I install titanium first and then restore my apps (some are paid versions) in order to get everything up and running again?

Yes. ps, All your paid apps are available from market again anyway in your downloaded apps . You dont pay for them again.
