Help NS I9020A: Accelerometer/Gyroscope don't work - device damaged?

Hi,
I bought a supposedly used Nexus S I9020A in apparently flawless condition and it was already updated to Android 2.3.4. Everything works just fine, but the Accelerometer and Gyroscope don't seem to function at all. I first noticed that apps like the browser don't auto-rotate, but even diagnosis apps like Andro Sensor don't show any values for the two sensors (as well as magnetic field) at all.
I've read about problems with the sensors not working properly on the Nexus S, but on my device they haven't worked once since I got it few days ago.

Auto-rotate is, of course, activated in the settings. I've already done a factory reset multiple times, which didn't yield any positive results. I've also tried manually updating the system to 2.3.6, or installing another version from scratch, but neither of those worked with the ROMs I've found. I don't want to root the phone, in case I return it to the seller.

Now, I'm wondering if there is anything else I can try to make the sensors work. Or is it most likely a damage of the hardware I just won't be able to fix?

I hope I can find some good advice on here, because currently I'm unsure if this is a hopeless case or not. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you have done all the proper troubleshooting techniques. :/ It definitely sounds like a hardware issue, so I would suggest returning it.

I see, that's unfortunate.

Another question: If I choose to root the phone, does that permanently change it, or can it be undone as well? I know I can just install the previous version of the OS, but will it still be "rooted"?
