Help Numerous problems with HTC Desire

Hi everyone,
I've had a Desire since last May. Since about September I've had a number of issues with it which have got worse over the last few months. I'm not sure how to sort them out and am wondering if it needs to go back. I got it from e2save (part of CPW) and am on Orange. These issues are as follows:

- The phone takes around 6-7 hours (yes, hours!) to switch off, so I never turn it off. If I need to do so, I have to take the battery out or let the battery completely run down. This can't be normal, can it?

- I often (about 99% of the time) have the low memory icon showing. I've tried moving apps to the SD card but it won't let me move any. On the SD card there's 3.45GB available out of a total of 3.69GB, and on the phone there's only 13.65MB memory left. Is there anything I can do to sort this out? I don't get email updates or text notifications when I have the low memory icon, the phone/internet runs slow, and it won't let me download new apps.

- My son was using it and he pressed something which has made the keypad tones sound like an old fashioned typewriter. Keypad tones are off but it still does it and it's so irritating that I have to put it on silent when I'm using the keypad. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this?

If anyone has any advice about the above, please could you tell me in layman's terms because I'm not particularly technologically savvy!

Thanks.

1) Backup your data and do a factory reset. Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset. All your installed apps and data will be gone, so you will have to install the apps again. Kind of last resort.

2) Download App2SD application from Market and see what are the largest apps that cause memory shortage. Delete the apps cache as suggested in the app. Use this app to move apps to SD card

3) Check the Settings > Audio for touch tones or haptic feedback.
Also check Settings > Language&Keyboard > Android Keyboard for odd settings.

Thanks Usta. I've done no.3 and it worked - it was under Language & Keyboard.

With no.1, do I really *need* to do a factory reset? Would you say this is the only option to sort out it not switching off? What exactly will I lose if I do this? Will I lose my photos, texts and bookmarked websites? How do I back these all up? I know how to backup photos onto my laptop but not texts, bookmarked sites etc.

Am I best doing no.2 after the factory reset?

Sorry for all the qs but as I said, I'm not great with technology!

Try nr 2 and see if you can find the issues.

However, you mention switch-off problem, and that might be because some important system file is damaged. The factory reset should restore all those system files and reset the phone to the original condition (just like you bought it). So, you will loose the apps you have installed, and your data in phone's internal storage, including contacts and the calendar. Note that your data on SD card will still be there, including your photos.
One way to backup your contacts, calendar, sms, etc is to use Mybackup Pro. There is a free limited trial version and a paid version in the Market.

In the unlikely case that the factory reset will not cure the problem, then it might be a hardware issue. In that case you need to send the phone to HTC for repair. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Just to let you know, this afternoon I backed everything up and did a full factory reset. So far so good! Thanks again for all your advice, it was invaluable.
