Help Numpty question about using headphones.

Hi again, guys.
You did so well in answering my first problem that I thought it only fair to give you another . :D
I have a mini SD card with some films on it so I settled down to watch one of them using headphones so as not to annoy the "Dragon Lady". About 20 minutes in, I took the headphones off to go and make us a brew and that's when I realised that the sound was coming from the Note's speakers and not from the headphones.
So the question is, is there some sort of setting that you have to change to convince the Note to send sound via the 3.5 mm socket and not the speakers?
Meanwhile, I'll keep looking but any advice will be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Steve

May sound super simple, but the headphone jack is kinda tight, make sure it's really pushed in there good. If that isn't the case check the headphones to see if they work on another device. The sound should only go through the speakers once it's unplugged. (haven't tried on my note but my s3 shuts sound off when I unplug my headphones)

That's odd behaviour. I plug in my headphones and they work fine (output is sent to the headphones). Even if it gets jarred and is semi-inserted, the player will automatically pause the movie/music (running foreground or background). It doesn't continue playing and will automatically pause the file if I remove my headphones.

I've tested this with stock players, mxplayer and player pro. All exhibit the same behaviour.

Just call me Mr Doofus from now on, lol
The headphones are toast. The grandkids had them about a week ago and I haven't used them since. The bits of bare wire hanging out where the cable splits would have been a big clue if I'd seen it.
Honest to God, I have never seen 2 kids who can break something just by looking at it as good as these two.
