Go to system/media and rename your current bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.bak Then copy the new bootanimation.zip into system/media Thats it!

You will need to have root and the root explorer app to get to system/media.

You can just use root explorer and put it in Data/Local, on boot it will look there first and then you don't have to mess with the stock animation. It can be left as is and it won't be used..

The following threads will back up what I posted:

Confirming northernmoris' statement. Just place the archive in /data/local/ and disregard the original boot file in /system/media/. The phone looks in /data/local/ first for some reason. If there isn't a boot animation there, then it proceeds to check /system/media/.

Amazing!!!

EDIT: so ive seen people with custom songs with their boot screen.. would i just add a clip of a song to that data/local folder to have that or what is the process for that?
