odd battery behavior

I still can't figure this battery out. A couple of weeks ago I unplugged from the wall charger at 100% on a Friday night, didn't use it pretty much all that weekend, and by Monday morning I still had ~45% of battery life left. Usually I'll get 1.5 days of moderate use before the battery hits the 30% level. However, there have been a couple of times where my battery seems to drain in like 12 hours for no apparent reason. During the night the phone usually drains anywhere from 5% to 8% just by sitting there, but when I wake up (like this morning) and it was down to 72% I know I'm in for a much shorter charge cycle. Checking the 'usage' stats doesn't show anything out of the ordinary either. My point is, WTF? How can I go as much as 3 days on one charge to less than a day on another charge, with conditions being the same in all cases?

There are 3 top factors that have to do with battery drain.
-How much the display is on.
-How many messages (SMS, MMS, Email...) come through the phone.
-The quality of the signal.

You can take the same phone, turn the display off and let it sit all weekend and have 2 different results just about every time.

Maybe that weekend you didn't get very many messages and had a SUPER signal.
The times that the battery drained in 12 hours, you were getting such crappy coverage the radio was working itself really hard to keep data synced.

That's the issue I have. I'm a moderate user. On a daily basis, I could barely get 10 hours out of the battery, even with it laying on my desk, untouched half the day. Mainly due to such crappy 3G/Edge signals around here.

But, I go to Orlando for the weekend where my Fiance lives, and the phone will last almost the whole time I'm there. Just because of signal quality.
