Root Odd Evo Battery Issues

My Evo has been having some battery troubles for quite some time now. The battery life used to be poor, but passable, and I was able to get a day's use out of it before it dropped to half a charge. But, now the battery has been draining abnormally fast; about 2-3 times as fast as before. I would say that it only gets about 8 hours of standby time with all the radios except 3G off, while using JuiceDefender. I tried getting a new expanded battery for the phone, but that didn't change anything. I tried installing a new ROM (Cyanogen), but that didn't help, either. What should I do?

since you are rooted, i moved you tothe rooting section.

i would try a different kernel.

kernels are what helps with battery life more then anything. but the thing with kernels is that it is always YRMV. what works for me may not work for you. the other thing about kernels is that they are very specific as to what type of roms they work with. so a froyo kernel only works with froyo roms and the gingerbread sense roms work with those types of kernels. also there are the aosp kernels that work with only aosp roms like cm7. so go to the rom/kernel sticky of this forum and make a nandroid backup and try and flash one.

another thing that can help is using a cpu scaling app like setcpu. this app can over and underclock your phone. what that means that it will set the cpu speed so that your phone can perform better and faster. but that can also cuase battery drain. you can also underclock your phone so that when you are not using your phone, it will slow the phone down and thus save battery life.

there are also governors that you can also set in setcpu. these governors will set on how fast to rev up the phone to the required settings that you set for over and underclocking. some of the governors have a screen off profile that will also help out in battery life.

what rom are you on?

I'm running Cyanogen Mod 7.1 RC1. In the interest of battery life, which kernel would you recommend?

try the tiamat 4.0.8 sbc kernel. hopefully you will get the same battery life that i did. i am getting 18-35 hrs of life out of this kernel. check it out. you can find it in the rom/kernel sticky of this forum.

Smart phone technology is growing at far faster rate than the battery technologies. We are getting more and more powerful phones and expecting them to do it on the same amount of power that they did before.

Being able to go through a day of normal use and have 50% still left is what many people would call good battery life lol. :D

So, SBC kernels are safe to use, then? I've heard some scary stories from researching them. :S

Well-said, but back when I owned an iPhone 3G, it never once dropped below 80% after a day's use. It's all relative, I guess.

I just started using a SBC myself. So far it's fine. I don't leave it on the charger overnight though. Usually keep an eye on it and take it off the charger an hour or so after it says 100%.

No one seems to mention this in any posts about SBC's but my understanding is that all Li-Ion batteries have an over-voltage protection built in so as to prevent over cahrging. I've bought batteries to use with lights I've built and they all say that the Protection is there.

Also does anyone know if it's only the HTC phones that have this issue of not charging 100%

Edit: I do use Battery Monitor Widget to keep an eye on vlotages in the battery and also Temps. A very good Monitor. I loaded it for use with the SBC Kernel.

Well, the new kernel didn't do much; it helped a tiny bit, but I'm starting to think this is a hardware problem. The battery still drains super-fast. It drains at about 1% per minute while the screen is on.

well kernels react differently on different phones, so after a few days make a nandroid backupand try another kernel. there are a few aosp kernels out that you can try.

It is not a bad idea. I'm still on pri 1.77 with the latest radios and no issues here with the roamer kernel. I like to think that downgrading the pri as the lady resort. Try other kernels .

I am having this same exact issue.. I am running Mik3D.. My battery life has deteriorated to the point where I am lucky if I get 5hrs of standby out of it.. I constantly have to keep my phone on the charger. I am thinking its a hardware issue and since I have insurance I may take it to the sprint store and see what they have to say. One question though. If I take it to sprint.. Should I unroot first?. Or will they not care?..

i would not unroot just yet. if anything it might be your battery.

what kernels have you tried? are you using setcpu? if so what are your settings?

for me i keep 3g turned off until i need it.

you might want to try an aosp rom. i'm on xplod with the tiamat 4.0.8 sbc kernel and i'm getting at least 18hrs and more off of one charge.

I love the Mik3D rom.. I really dont want to change it.. I had the Gold Monkey Kernal and it made my phone unstable.. Every second things were force closing.. I guess thats what the kernels are there to do.. But I didnt like it.. I have a stock Kernal running.. I took my phone off the charge literally 30 minutes ago.. And its down to about 55%.. Its crazy...

Any recommendations on a Kernal for Mik3D?

not sure but kernels should not make thing force close like that. but try the freedom kernels. start out with the aggressive freedom give it a few days to settle in and move on down the line until you get to the less freedom kernel or until you find the right kernel for you.

also make sure that you use setcpu as well. try either the interactive x or the smartass governors.

Pardon my ignorance but what is Interactive X and Smartass Governors?.

governors tell setcpu how fast to bring the phone up to speed and how fast to slow it down according to what you set for the over and underclocking speeds you set. here is a guide that explains about setcpu and governors: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/210253-setcpu-guide.html. it does not go over interactive x as it is pretty new to the evo. it is very similar to smartass.
