Help Odd Microphone issue

Lukeal

Lurker
My microphone on the phone suddenly decided to route it's audio through the speakers no matter what.
So the behavior is:

1) microphone works (picks up my voice)
2) my voice does not get sent to caller or any application (tried using a dB meter).
3) my voice echoes out of the ear speaker with about a 1/2 second lag delay (along with the caller I am trying to speak to)
4) with speaker phone on, it still retransmits out the loud speaker and descends into an echo feedback loop...
5) with a headset on, it plays into the headset speakers
6) using the mute button while in a call has no effect on this behavior

Any bluetooth headset works fine

Because of the latency in the transmission (I can finish a word before I hear it out the audio path), I am 99% sure this is NOT hardware (solid state shouldn't lag by a second or 3....) I have soft and factory reset. Tried plugging in a headset a bunch of times rapidly.
3 different helpdesk calls (virgin, radio shack, and motorola) have said to send it back, but their "hi-tech" guys didn't try anything slick.
Just "factory reset" and then "well that is weird" "send it back". This strikes me as an application or development setting to test the microphone or something. Anyone have an idea how to correct? (would rather not RMA the phone and be without one for a week or 3)

If you factory reset, you rule out the software problem. It would probably be the mic hardware. Possibly the driver (I don't think a factory reset changes that).

so factory reset doesn't completely wipe the entire settings of the system. I am sure there are things it says "well that can never change, so don't worry about resetting settings or wiping data for that...". Like the microphone that you have no control over at all and could "never change".

I am wondering if I root it, truly wipe it, reinstall the ROM...

I am pretty sure a factory reset will replace /system and /data. I do not know where the drivers are stored, as I have never messed with them. I just threw that out there without thinking about it much. If your phone is stock and not rooted I doubt you messed up any mic software.

I have not replaced my phone, but I hear they are quick about it, and I don

Well, I might not have messed with it, but some application might have is what I am thinking. I had recently installed an MP3 application (like 2 days ago) to make ringtones and such that was acting up.

Without root access it shouldn't be able to mess up anything that removing the app or factory resetting wouldn't fix.
I still think a hardware issue is what is causing it, but that is just a guess. It could also be possible that some app changed a setting that caused it, but a factory reset would fix that.

I know somewhere in the all thing root section (I don't want to mess with finding it and linking from my phone at work) is a copy of the image folder that you see when you put the phone in download mode and connect it to your computer. You could try doing that and replacing it, but I don't know if it would yield different results. If you mess with that I believe there are 2 versions, so use the right one.

p.s. The thread I was talking about is a sticky in all things root. The one titled [FIX] Mobile Partition...

if you return your phone through VM they will send you a phone in a couple days. mine came in one day. then you send your phone to them in the prepaid envelope they include in the package you recieve with your replacement phone. So you will not be without a phone for even and hour.;)

well, I rooted the phone, used CWM and wiped it to bones and reinstalled the unpowered image that was posted. Still didn't fix.
As posted above, I did go back to VM and they are shipping me a replacement phone with a shipping envelope. Never going to swap from that company now. it was like 5 minutes total (yeah that is including the no time I spent on hold).
Thanks for the attempts. and it was good finding this site because cwm is definitely going on new phone for sure...

Just got off the phone with cs about speaker phone echo. I just put them on speaker phone and it two seconds she made arrangements to send me a new one. Now im thinking its a design flaw. My Optimus didn't do this and it's talk hole is under the bottom as opposed to the front bottom w/Triumph. But then again maybe it's a noise cancelling softwear issue! I don't know too much about this stuff.... but i'll find out soon. let you know jim
