Liamo_210

Android Expert
So i decided to root my galaxy s in preperation for rooting my s3 and nexus 4, i wanted to start on a phone that wouldnt matter if i bricked t.

The problem is i need odin but the link is broken on the site of the root gide i am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546.

So does anyone have a link to odin that i can have vand that will work for flashing XXJW4

Thanks,
Liam

Did you root your SGS? I'm just about to root my wife's... I don't think I need to do it with Odin though... her's is only on Android 2.1 - what version was/is your's on??

Havnt rooted it yet. I havnt had the time. I'll probably do it next Saturday after I get my nexus 4. I have everything figured out though and everything I need downloaded onto my computer so I'm all good to go.

I'm on 2.3.3. I have some useful links if you need them ? I'm doing it as an experiment to give me the confidence to root my s3 and/or my nexus 4.

I think I'll take you up on those links, if you don't mind! :)

Her's is only on 2.1, so I guess I'd have to update it to the latest firmware... you wouldn't happen to be able to point me in the right direction to update, would you?

Well you could go about it 2 different ways.

1. Download Kies from the samsung website and upgrade the phone using kies to the latest firmware ( Its probably 2.3.3).
Then using this method i found what looks the easiest way to flash 2.3.6 XXJW4 so you can root using the following link. But first check your firmware after updating using kies as you may already be on this version e.g 2.3.6 XXJW4. If so you can skip this step. Here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546
After flashing 2.3.6 XXJW4 you need to root the device. The link above provides a very easy to understand guide of doing this.
Finally after rooting you install the custom Rom. Although the link above shows you how to do this i believe that this one is much easier to follow Samsung Galaxy S: Full Update Guide - CyanogenMod Wiki
This guide gives you two options on how to flash cyanogen mod.

2. You could just research on how to root while on 2.1 but i dont have any idea how to do that so i wont be able to help. :(

If you have any questions about either guide ive read them so i should be able to help. :D

P.s I will be rooting mine on saturday or sunday so if your not comfortable doing it you could wait for me to do it and if i root and flash a mod succesfully i would be able to walk you through it. :D

Awesome thanks Liam. I actually looked at rooting 2.1, but all of the links for the file that is used to root it are dead!

Will look in to sorting this and give you a shout if needed :)

No probs.
Those links are quite easy to follow and ill update you if i root successfully.
You need to use Odin using the method ive shown above but the link for it in the xda developer forums dosnt work anymore so here is another one . This is the version you need Odin3 v1.7.exe. and here is a download link Hotfile.com: One click file hosting: Odin3 v1.7.exe

I subscribed aswell in case you have any questions.

I've had issues with Keis when I installed it on the computer (when the wife got the phone in the first place)... wanted to avoid it, as it just seems rubbish... guess I've gotta bite the bullet though!

Really i found it pretty easy to use and its not like you have much to do with it, just update to the latest firmware.

Couldn't get it to play... got me interested now... gonna have a look at downloading it and updating her phone :)

If you get it to update using kies check what baseband versions you have 2.3.3 or 2.3.6 XXJW4 if you have the latter you can skip the first step on the xda developer guide and go straight to rooting. :D

I have to the the first step as the version on mine is 2.3.3 and ive checked there is no 2.3.6

Just installing Keis now... it seems to have crashed... "Installing HotFix" and the green progress bar just keeps filling (all the way to the top) and restarting...

Right... after letting me update from 2.1 to 2.2.1, the cable is having none of it! Knew that this USB cable was knackered... have to get my brother to bring one down with him tomorrow when he comes n do it tomorrow night!! :)

Have you tried plugging it in and out or had it just completely stopped working e.g not even charging the phone ?

No... I had to keep slight pressure on it in one direction for Keis to allow it to update to 2.2.1 and now it's not recognizing it :(

Oh well... will try with a different cable tomorrow!! :)

Did you find a new usb?
I tried putting the galaxy s into my computer today and it wasnt recognizing it either but i got it to work after a while of messing around with it. Still no 2.3.6 update for me so im going to have to flash it first before rooting.

My little bro is round tonight... not gonna be able to do anything tonight. Will be having a look tomorrow (when the hangover has subsided) :)
