Root Odin question

I am new to Samsung and the Odin interface, but I have a lot of flashing experience coming from a Droid X. From what I gather, Odin is for making changes to the operating system. If you want to flash a ROM you would do that after you install the clockwork .tar file from Odin. Once you have CWM on your phone you would then simply download the ROM you want, place it on your SDcard and reboot into CWM and install the zip file of the ROM. Take a look at some of the threads here on how to get CWM and your phone rooted.

This is correct. Odin flash files are typically .tar or .tar.md5 files. The ROM zip files are installed pretty much the same as they are on other phones (well, at least the Motorolas that I have experience with), by using CWM. Some ROMs have Odin flash files, but typically you'll only see kernels, some modifications (voodoo, for example), and things like stock recovery (ie. setting back to ED1, like a new phone) using Odin. There are exceptions, though, like the Imnuts kernel/CWM/GummyCharged 1.7.5 all-in-one Odin file available on XDA.
