Help Offical Moment Update

Wait, so if I put Zeifie's kernel on I can't take it in? And aren't we able to flash the official kernel back on?

Thats right you need to download cj05 reflash your phone back to stock with odin then you can take it in

you need to goto zefies fileserve and in the stock folder get SPH-M900_CJ05_REL.7z then extract it with 7zip(he now uses 7zip instead of winrar now to save disk space and bandwidth)

Just installed spare parts to check on the status of my battery.

I took my phone off the charger just before 11:00am today. I've used it as normal all day, and it is now 9:50pm, so it has been off the charger for about 11 hours.

I didn't take notes on how much I used the phone today, but this is probably pretty close: I spent about 40 minutes on the phone today. I've sent/received a half dozen SMS messages. I've checked facebook and twitter numerous times today (probably every 30 minutes). I've probably spent half an hour or so browsing the web.

Spare parts reports that my battery is at 50% right now. With the stock firmware, I would probably be seeing 15% if not less by now.

I read of the update last night on this forum and my first though was to simply wait as I loved the moment right out of the box (other than the battery issues which you've all helped work out, thx). The phone has only been out for a few months so I feel lucky the update is ready now. I also have no problem waiting longer if necessary for Sprint to knock out the kinks of the distribution (I'm a Microsoft user so I'm used to waiting! :)) But all of negative comments here and nothing to do until the NFL playoffs started gave me the urge to try it myself...

I called the local store at 9am, the tech said that I was the first to ask for it and he hadn't tried it yet. He wanted to try it on a phone at the store first then call me back. An hour later he called and told me he was ready. I didn't get to Sprint until 12pm and the tech told me it would take a few hours so I left to do a few errands. At 3pm I went back to the store and the phone was ready. The first thing I did was check the time since the last reboot, it was on for over 2 hours meaning it only took the entire upgrade less than an hour. The worst part of the whole process was reloading the apps, the Market remembered my purchases so I didn't have to pay again but I forgot what apps I've downloaded...next time I'll write down what I have or use the Screen Shot function I see now. Contacts I recovered from Google.

I was sort of annoyed that I had to wait 3 hours for the phone but in retrospect as a tech myself if I service equipment for the first time I exaggerate on time needed as you never want to have someone come back early and you aren't ready.

1. The keyboard is fixed and is very responsive.
2. Screen orientation switches faster and seems less cpu intensive.
3. As stated earlier the battery level is no longer under "Phone Status"
4. Switching screens is totally smooth and faster w/o jerking.
5. GPS is faster and seems to burn less power.
6. I didn't use the cell tower location before but it shows me about a 1/2 mile from where I am now.
7. My battery app displays 90% power and it's been over 2 hours since the last charge...yesterday it would be at about 50% or 60% now.

I liked this phone when I bought it and I love it now...I think I'll lie it next to me when I go to bed tonight. ;)

Everyone just be a little patient and things will come out fine.

I went to the Sprint store in Pinellas Park, Florida (St Petersburg). I've been all over the country and this is the best Sprint store I've been to yet.

Sweet! I'll do this and update the phone and tell everyone how it goes.

Anyone who wants to set themselves up for disappointment in life should go on expecting that when something new comes out (like an update for the Moment) that thousands of people across the country who have never worked with it before (like all the Sprint store techs) will INSTANTLY know how to use it.

Anyone who works in tech help of any sort has to actually have a bit if time to learn new information when it comes out. They do not just walk into the office and get knowledge instantly downloaded into their brains. ;)

Expecting a tech to always instantly know what you want them to know about a brand new product? FAIL.
We have been doing the same procedure for months and had to figure out how to do it for ourselves.. didnt have a nice e-mail guiding us and we can usually fix any bricks :)
Oh, don't get me wrong, if a tech bricks your phone because he doesn't follow the instructions he's been given that's a total FAIL on his part. I'm saying people expecting instant gratification on updates like many on here seem to is FAIL. As has been pointed out, lots of us on here are on the bleeding edge on this stuff. We have to learn a little patience sometimes, that's all I'm trying to say. ;)

The reason Zefie was able to release his stuff so much faster is because he doesn't have the constraint of having to have people beating it up testing it before he releases it. He tests it on his, releases it, and those if us using it give feedback. Before Sprint/Samsung release an update to the public they have to do all of that in house to make sure it works as advertised. That, very simply, takes time. Folks that are demanding to be on the bleeding edge should come on over to the Dark Side instead of waiting for "official" updates. :D
Zefie does hav ea couple others who test the thing alongside him usually :)
There are 3 versions of odin, right? is it confirmed that NONE will work?
I might have been a little to specific with that post.. ODIN 4.3 WILL flash your phone.. but you have to flash back to cj05 TOTAL STOCK (4.03 and CL14 SBL will not allow partial tar files.. it has to be a complete flash)... then you can flash again with 3.98 BUT you will need a specific file that has the oob data injected into it (you loose this ability due to teh 4.3 flash back)
Same version here, updated today. Sounds like maybe a typo in the flyer or maybe the flyer was drafted early in anticipation of the release and a newer version came after.
The flier used a development phone with hardware revision 4... we have hardware revision 8 thus the difference

so users who have had the official update... has anyone tried to flash anything with odin afterwards? I'd like to hear a confirmation that that method of hacking into the phone and rooting is still, or no longer, available to updated Moments.

Hi:

I did my update today in San Francisco at the 843 Mission St. location. I brought the phone in, went to grab a quick lunch and by the time I got back the phone was updated. The techs did a prompt job.

I backed up my phone last night with Sprite backup and Dragon apps. Sprite backup restored my contacts, call log, wallpaper, ringtone and NONE of my applications--yes I registered market with my gmail account. Market listed Sprite backup, one of my two paid applications and NONE of my other applications. My dolphin browser bookmarks are gone as well.

The GPS seems to be working. Thankfully I'm no longer in Estonia, Florida or New Jersey but the weather widget on the desktop is not. The screen seems to be much more responsive. There seem to be three sections of your wallpaper--left, middle, right. Scrolling through them before was extremely difficult while it's smooth and easy now.

I'm concerned about backing up since we'll all have to go through the same process when Android 2.1 rolls out. Others have reported that My Backup restored their applications but download manager didn't recognize them for updates. Sprite Backup didn't backup any applications.

I'm going to have to spend hours resetting up all of my applications only to do the same thing over again. Any suggestions for an application that can do a successful backup would be appreciated.

Tom

Been almost 6 hrs. Near just about 3 hours of nothing but web use on the phone and finally reach 15% battery. Still going strong ... keyboard jas almost no lag at all now. Other thing wish they could have included was longer or adjustable keyboard light timer. No dim screen warning yet either at 15% mark as indicated by SpareParts.

It is.. but you need to flash back to stock cj05 with 4.03 then you can flash with 3.98 again.. but you need the specific oob roms

For people that need to backup there apps get the app called appcontrol by curvefish it'll back up your apps to your sd card ive used it successfully numerous times although it wont back up any of the data you got saved into the apps.

Okay so if a user gets the official upgrade they can flash back to the original stock kernel with Odin 4.03, and then flash to Zef's kernel series with Odin 3.98?

And all of this has been confirmed... someone out there has actually done it? They now have a phone that's been updated to the official release AND a Zefie series kernel?

I'm asking very specifically just to be clear... we're tossing around version numbers and technical terms all over the place lol.

for everybody talking about the the correct baseband version go by this websites and not the flyer

They also say to keep checking this page because it will tell you when it is available via computer download or OTA. I have it bookmarked and do a "Update Firmware" on my phone several times a day. ;)

MomentFlash app is a bit different I just noticed, which may be how the OS launches things. I click on the button to launch it, and a second screen opens now, with a huge button. Then I can turn on or off the Flashlight app. BEfore just the icon launched and activated my flashlight.

Perhaps you added an icon for the Application instead of choosing the Widget...

As far as the update, I had a bad experience on Friday. Hopefully the store near me will know what they are doing by Monday. I would prefer an OTA update that wouldn't wipe my apps though. I was hoping to leave the app reinstall behind me when I made the switch to Android.

Having just had the update done to my three Moment phones today, this is what I can say so far:

TIP #1
Make sure to back up all your apps and data prior to the upgrade. The upgrade will completely wipe your phone and when they hand it back to you, it will be like the day your first got it.

I used MYBACKUP from the market, which has a 30 day free trial. I may even buy it because the backup/restore was quick, accurate, and painless.

TIP #2
Find a tech who has done an upgrade before. Apparently, it is a bit tricky. The tech I had said the first one he did was a bear. With what he learned, my three were a snap. I read a similar comment in the forum regarding another poster who has the same experience, so I don't think I'd want to be the first upgrade the tech has done.

Does MYBACKUP work for text logs?

No, you have to flash the entire system back to original, after which you would be running the CJ05 ROM, kernel, and modem. After that you could then flash to Zefie's kernels with the oob coding, but you would still be running CJ05. I believe you would also be able to go to Zefie's version of the CL14 ROM and modem at that point if you wanted to.

@BigJohn

Sounds like he used Zef's:

Yes... I was already running Zef's 9.2 kernal .. http://fileserv.co.cc/zefie/android/samsung_moment/roms/custom/SPH-M900_ZE09.2_KERN.7z
I used Odin 3.98 to flash the CL14 working file http://fileserv.co.cc/zefie/android/samsung_moment/roms/custom/SPH-M900_CL14_WORKING_SYSTEM_ONLY.7z

then after reboot flashed the CL14 modem file http://fileserv.co.cc/zefie/android/samsung_moment/roms/custom/SPH-M900_CL14_CDMA-ONLY.7z

and have been running it all day... it has worked great. my version number and everything match what the "store updates" are saying.. yet I still have all my apps and everything... didn't wipe my phone at all.

Maybe I didn't get the full update or something, but every change that all the "store updated" people are reporting, I have also... so it seems that we just know how to update our phones than they do. lol :D

Thanks again Zefie and crew :)

You dont have the cl14 kernel.. that is the only difference (since you are using zef's custom kernel which isnt built from the cl14 source code...) so the only thing you dont have is the "battery improvement".. you have my battery code... idk if sprint fixed it better then i tried to tho because i have yet to flash their kernel

Your battery code has been great... I haven't gone below 50% since I got it. (of course I got kinda used to plugging it in fairly often.. but I've gone most all day with decent use and never once got worried that I would drain it all).

So if that's all I'm missing.. then I don't feel like I'm missing anything at all.. in fact.. I'm ahead. New update with fixes + no data loss = win!

Thanks again! :)

After spending 3 hours at the Sprint store there is one suggestion I would make to people. This update has to be done from a clean reset, suggest that to the tech. After they finally asked to reset mine it was done in 10 minutes. I would also suggest that you tell them not to backup and reinstall your contacts, use gmail. If they do it you get duplicates as soon as you synchronize.

Lastly I have noticed using battery life by curvefish that the MV for the battery is now in much smaller gradients instead of 4200 3900 etc I am now seeing 4127-4169 for full charge and the numbers go down the same way (measured in the ones column) during discharge

Here's my "next day" update on battery meter, it's definitely improved (along with all the other stuff mentioned in the update)

I took my phone off charger yesterday morning between 7 and 7:30. Used it lightly for most of the day. Last night, used it for downloading some apps and some web browsing. Today did some more apps (cause I didn't write them all down before the update, so I'm still remembering them all).

Battery meter now showing 70% (I'm using a battery widget that also has quick switches for GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth and display settings by mippin.com btw). Now I'm used to my phone easily lasting 2 days anyways, but never trusted the meter. Seems now I can put a little more faith in the meter as it is matching what I see in the service menus accessed through the 3 button call, center, end button routine.

BUT I do expect that the Sprint store techs should be aware of the update and have the required software BEFORE there is a public release notice. Allowing your personnel to be blindsided by the public is a failure from the get go. From all indication, Sprint announced the update but failed to inform their own techs internally beforehand. When I went into the local repair center, I had to show the tech the release announcement to make him aware the update even existed. There's also the issue of half baked update software as it seems many repair centers still can't get get the update software to function and I suspect may even be resorting to telling lies to appease customers ("we were told to stop installing it because it will brick your phone").

Been reading here for a while....figured I'd join and post.

Just tried to get my phone updated at my local sprint store. I was the first one they had request it. After about an hour I left the store with a new phone still on CJ05. They bricked my original. As my replacement was being activated the employee helping me said that the techs were reading their email after bricking my phone and found an email telling them not to update any Moments due to several being bricked by the update.

there ya go, a confirmation from a user.. be careful guys

A "confirmation" from a user who has never previously posted is rather suspect. None of the "regular" posters here have had any problems. Besides, even if true, getting a brand new phone is hardly a bad outcome.

Well...I thought people here seemed nice and helpful...I've learned a lot by reading. Guess I made a mistake by posting my experience because now I'm told I'm lying? Feel free to call the store in Friendswood, TX on Bay Area Blvd and ask.
