Help Offical Moment Update

If your in the Dallas area I let the people at MacAuthor & 635 upgrade mine today so they should know how to do it. I had a nice clean install afterwords.. So you may want to do a backup or whatever first(They did put my contact back on). I gave it to them at 11:45am this morning and they were finished by 4pm. But it works now. GPS works much better. The battery gauge seems to stay at a 100% longer then started going down much slower than before. Over all seems pretty stable, except for a couple of concerns..
Now since they completely erase my phone, I had to download most of my programs again, and I did that while in the car(thank goodness for Friday traffic). I had to reboot the phone at least three times, because the network hung up while I was downloading from the market.
First time I had Navigation running in the background so I did not think much about it. The other 2 times were clean boots after I downloaded +10 programs and several were in the queue, the data icon at the top just showed data going one way. So I ended up rebooting.
My other concern is after downloading +75 programs from the market, talking on the phone using blue tooth, the phone was still at about 50% battery. I turned on the Moment flashlight and before knew it(2 seconds top) the battery gauge had gone down to 5% and which dimmed the screen. Luckily I was home by then so I just put it on the charger.

I have been wanting to reset my phone, to see if it would work better(not today!), but having the gps work correctly, and the battery not dropping as quick was worth the effort.

Happy Updating!

I used the free 30 day trial of "MyBackup" to make backups of all my apps, hoping to get the upgrade tomorrow.

Does the phone atleast remember what apps you HAD downloaded so you can get them again easier? Do you have to re-buy pay apps (thinking beautiful widgets...)

Nope. When I went to the "My Downloads" section of the Market after the update, there was nothing listed. You can get your purchased apps back without paying for them again by searching for the app. It'll say "Purchased" to the right of the app in the search results, and then you can install it the same as you would any free app.

I'm here in SoCal, too- and am lately in both North SD County and LA/OC. I was going to head to the Poway repair center today but decided to check here first, and after the reports here I think I'll wait 'till I get home tomorrow and try the Irvine Culver store (they seem to have their isht together there, but not exactly sure if they're a repair center).

Which stores did you try?

It's amazing this is going so badly- I never had this issue with updating my Treos.

Wow. What a small world. I'm here in sabre springs but I use zefie's updates which are easy and fix things quicker. I just saw the new sprint store over by stater bros today. Have to check that one out.

Just curious, wouldn't an OTA maintenance update from sprint that wiped out people's phones be a disaster (for everyone outside of these forums)? Or is that normal?
And also, not that it's that big of a deal to back up, but, do Zefie's udpates also hard reset the phone?

No they just do a reset after the kernel has downloaded to your phone.

Nope. Zefie's updates give all the benefits without wiping a thing. So much better than the sprint techs. Granted they can only do what they're told, though, so you can't fault them too much.

ok. well my experience was a little less than desirable but i got the update nonetheless. the tech at the marlborough, ma store had no idea what he was doing. i went to framingham from there where the guy who did the update hadn't done one yet either and this was at 7:30pm. you'd think other people in the area were doing this. oh well. anyway, yes it flashes your harddrive so make sure you back up everything. i've noticed a problem with mybackup pro that i'm going to email the dev's on...it seems if you load your apps back from there, they no longer register in the market as having downloaded them. so you get the apps but you can't check for updates. shitty.

feedback on update: i've noticed the new samsung pulse screen in place of the android one. that will probably change when we all get 2.1. the notification bar is definitely bigger. at least it seems that way to me. i drained the battery 100% last night and am currently charging it back to 100%...so we shall see what was fixed there. according to sprint.com it does say that it fixes "battery issues". and lastly, i am OVERJOYED that my location now correctly comes up in gmaps, weatherbug elite, twidroid pro, and others!!! i am no longer located in Lithuania or Estonia or some other random ass place. anyone else notice a little more zippiness too?

OH! and one more note! the techs at the place that did my update did say that the OTA version was coming "tomorrow" meaning TODAY! so everyone keep checking your phones. i'm curious to know if this is true!!

I really want this update but I don't want to wipe my phone so I guess I'll wait till I can get it OTA. I would be soo pissed if I was a tech guy that was working on getting this to work all day yesterday and they released it OTA today! But I'm not a tech guy...so I'd laugh! lol ;)

I haven't tried the camera yet (honestly, I almost never use the camera in my phone).

I'll play with the pandora app more in the next few days to see if it behaves better. I didn't try sliding the keyboard while it was playing.

Just a word of warning to anyone who hasn't read the entire thread yet... The update from sprint WILL wipe your phone!!! If you have paid for apps, make sure that you back them up first! I forget what it's called, but a buddy of mine uses an app to backup all of his applications to the SD card on his MyTouch. If you have only free apps (like me), make a quick list of what you have installed so you can easily pull them back down again.

While it's possible to update the phone without wiping everything (as Zefe's updates prove), I fully understand why Sprint would want to flash an update that would reset the phone back to a "stock" configuration. From a support standpoint, it gives them a "known value" so to speak. It removes a lot of possible variables for their support people to have to deal with. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the OTA update warned the users that the update will perform a factory reset on the phone, and make them confirm that they actually want to apply the update.

The relatively small handful of of folks like us on this forum tend to be pretty self-supporting when it comes to technology, but we are a minuscule fraction of the Sprint/Moment user base. Tech savvy users haven't had too much trouble with the custom updates, but... we're also aware of the risks we take when we flash our phones.

I imagine that within a couple more days, Sprint will start updating phones before even handing them to customers. Considering that advertising for the moment only started a few weeks ago, in the grand scheme of things, there probably aren't that many people that have the pre-CL14 moments anyway.

Isn't the internet echo chamber awesome? It polarizes and magnifies all at once!!

We're early adopters folks. I'm really surprised at how impatient some of us here are.

numus posted that the official update will make zephie's custom kernal not work
Numus was just pointing out that there's a chance that they will not work. And if you choose to do the official update then you are on your own with no support from the SDXers.
So mostly it's just speculation (though well informed), and hasn't been confirmed yet whether or not zefie's stuff will not work.

When the update is applied, does it wipe all your apps? Do I need to write down the names of them to re-install... or can I back them up somehow, or are they saved in my market download list to re-install?

In short, what am I going to lose when I get the update, and how do I preserve as much of my info as possible?

according to everyone iv seen updated, everything will be wiped just like a factory reset so, back up your sd card to your computer and you can use "app dragon" i believe to save and send a list of your apps to your e-mail.

Out of 3 stores I finally may have found one that has a clue what they're doing. The first one said, actually "you can update through your phone...blah blah blah" and I said "no you can't". Once he realized he didn't have a clue what he was talking about he took my name and number to call me back. The second store wasn't aware of the update either and didn't have a tech in today. The third store said they didn't know about it when I called but that they'd find out and download the necessary drivers so that when I came it they'd be ready to go. Upon getting there the suggested that leave it since I was their guinea pig. An hour later when I returned the tech said she had to call her head TSA who had received the download this morning. She was going to "review" it before sending it to the store. So...I'm awaiting a call from them before I go back. Not looking good so far.

If you mean Grand Rapids, MI, then come on down to Kalamazoo, the universal wireless store right off I-94 on Westnedge did a top notch job of taking care of my update, it was flawless.

Sprint repair center in Merrick NY (operated by iMobile, not Sprint) still doesn't have a clue how to get the update to work. After 2 days of trying, I think they have effectively given up. If I get a chance Monday, I'll give the Sprint owned 86th ST NYC Repair center a shot....or I'll wait for ota and/or the 2.1 upgrade whenever it's available. This upgrade really highlights the differences between WebOS and Android. The same carrier (Sprint) can do almost effortless ota upgrades of 130mb+ with the Pre but can't even do a successful in store update on this phone, much less ota. Utter and complete FAIL!

Yes, I read your post but I just don't want to drive that far. LOL!

Well that makes me sound mean :(
Naa.. I will spell out the situation so no one gets confused....
CL14 SBL (Secondary Boot Loader) located in the bml2 partition on the phone does NOT allow odin 3.98 to communicate with the phone... Since ODIN isn't officially for the M900 Moment they don't care if cl14 breaks compatibility or not..
None of the developers at SDX (atleast from what i have seen) will risk the Sprint update, because the risk we can't reflash with ODIN means everything we have done and any future modifications will be worthless unless we find another method to flash... Thats what i ment by "your on your own"... because we arent going to be able to replicate and find new methods to flash until we understand the cl14 sbl more (we are waiting on it to be open source hopefully)

I called all the repair centers near me and all said the same thing...They haven't received the software yet and to try back next week. Lame..................

The biggest issue I have with this update is the black background on the calendar app.. I tried the calendar.apk from the sdx site but its a no go on installing it.

Finally got a chance to sit down at the computer to post an update.

I picked up my handset from Sprint this afternoon. The update completed successfully, and the phone is reporting CL14.

I'm VERY happy with the update so far.

I've been able to use Google maps twice this afternoon/evening, and the phone has been able to lock onto my position with no problems at all. GPS and Network based location are both enabled. It finds me MUCH more quickly than it ever did before. The Accuweather app found me immediately, which NEVER worked before. I ALWAYS got weather reports for countries on the other side of the world.

The interface is more resposive and fluid. Menus and web pages scroll more smoothly. Things generally feel more "snappy". (yeah yeah, I know... quite scientific)

I won't be able to comment on battery life until Sunday when I've had a chance to go through a normal day or two of use on a full overnight charge. I notice that the entry "settings > about phone > status > battery" does not show a percentage any more.

Numus, if you see this... what battery meter do you suggest I get? What will give me the most information to relay back to you on battery performance with the new official firmware? Does it matter?

The keyboard lag has been fixed. I probably won't download HandcentSMS again since I can use the stock SMS app without the keyboard lag. I had also experienced keyboard lag in other apps to. So far, keyboard response has been perfect after the update.

Lots of folks here on this thread seem to be wound a little tight. The phone just came out in November. It's just now the middle of January and they've got an update out to fix some major issues. As telecom companies go, that is pretty darn fast. The update just became available today, and considering the circumstances, I think the techs did a pretty good job scrambling to figure out how to get this update installed.

In the next couple days, I'm sure things will go much more smoothly for anyone who isn't on the absolute bleeding edge of things (read: the rest of the general population who have this phone).

I haven't tried Bluetooth yet. I might get a chance to try it this weekend, but honestly, I never use my headset. I wonder where it is... :o/

Thanks for the update! Sounds good!!
