Not really, the previous releases were developer releases, you had to look for them. This is the first automatic update to 2.2 for all users

Correction, the automatic update as of right now is only out to Nexus One users, not all users and that's in increment. Most of the regular N1 users in the Forum that haven't received the OTA has manually updated.

If HTC don't give us Cupcake, I'm sure someone else will :P

*cough* FroYo ...you don't want Cupcake...that's basically demoting the OS to 1.5...and I know you don't want THAT ;)

today i saw this

Android 2.2 Platform | Android Developers

i just want to ask, is it compatible with my HTC Desire?
how to install it on my phone?
Do a search for "Froyo". It's the same thing, and will be coming to your Desire some time in the not-too-distant future.

By the way, that link is in the main for developers who want to update their Software Developer Kit (SDK) so that they can write applications for Froyo.

Who is losing sleep?
It is a major advance over Eclair - apps to SD being the main jump forward, but massively increased speed is another major factor.
It's far more than the increase in version from 2.1 to 2.2 suggests.

Can someone tell me:

WRT speed increase - will this be system-wide? Will my general experience be more responsive? The Desire (while it CAN do multitasking) does get pretty dim-witted when pushed even moderately. I also find the keyboard laggy, even on a fresh startup.

Will FroYo address Android being a stumbling drunk, or will it show improvement in certain quarters?

Can you be more specific? What lags?

I think you got spoiled by the iPhone speed (which has to do with the simpleOS which is designed not to lag by skimping on features) :)

Coming from the N900 I find the Desire really snappy. Considering all the things it runs, it is really, really fast. Even on heavy load.

BTW - it is system wide, but the speed increase is mostly for the CPU-heavy apps. Not sure how noticable it will be in standard use (it should, though), but I heard that the keyboard is, indeed, a bit snappier on Froyo. Haven't seen Froyo myself yet, though, so I can't say.

I find the keyboard laggy - and yes, I'm probably spoiled by the iPhone's keyboard, but what features is it missing do you think?

I love what the Desire can do, and I always feel like I have more possibilities in my pocket than when I have the 3gs. I'd just like it to transition between apps faster (adding images into twitter from the gallery?) - and the phone dialer/keypad etc is pretty horrible. I use dialerone - which I am given to understand is the best out there? Proximity sensor is not consistent either.

Will 2.2 speed up ALL tasks, or just some?

Will 2.2 speed up ALL tasks, or just some?

That speed-up relates to the operation of the (JIT) Just In Time compiler.

Code written in JAVA is usually compiled into an intermediate form called bytecode. Bytecode is portable across operating systems and devices because when it runs on a device, the JIT first turns the bytecode into machine-executable instructions (which are device-specific). The improvements to the JIT mean that any JAVA application will run faster.

I imagine that a good proportion of the Android OS itself uses the JIT (as well as any applications installed from the Market) so, yes, you're generally going to see a speed improvement.

Is Froyo really that good that people are losing sleep over it?

Yes it is. Dalvik-Jit Compiler, Android Intents, Backup2Cloud, AppMarket Webinterface.
I know there are Apps for all the things i mentioned, but i rather have it native.

I would imagine the new streamlined JIT will be less labour intensive, and so use less processor clock cycles. That should equate to less power consumption.

I emailed HTC adding some solid hype into it, saying: Hi I bought this HTC desire on the basis in thinking you would roll out the new froyo update. And as of today we still have no update, I love HTC but if updates are going to be slow like this then me and others in forums etc will leave. I do hope you don't take the mick like you did with the hero. The desire is awesome and deserves the new froyo update with sense UI. Please don't send me some standard reply, pass this on to someone who actually make the updates or who makes the decision to release them, now at the moment you say 3rd quarter, I'm hoping this is true. But an exact date would be helpful. I have no space in my desire left for apps and it is really annoying. Who ever came up with the idea of apps to internal memory needs sacking. I look forward to getting a decent reply off you. Thank you Azz. Let's see what reply i get. Should be interesting, will post here when I do.

I hope not lol I am just going to bombarD them with reply until I get an answer, just like the press do. I want a proper answer. I'm sure most people do, and on behalf of everyone that is what I am going to do. :)

I enjoyed your post more before you edited it ("I ubersexual no space in my desire"). :D

But that's not down to HTC - that's how Google designed it.

And to be fair, 2.2 has only been released (fully) a few days - give them a chance to finalise/test things - last thing we want is a release with more bugs than it fixes!

Haha I don't know where that came from, I blame predictive text, I sent that ubersexual off in the email as well haha.

That's true - when froyo does arrive, I'd like it to be stable! Just look at all the issues people are having with the current minor update being rolled out. Two of my friends' phones were almost bricked by it.

edit: @aldredd

Do you know how long they have advertised the new firmware. Why advertise if you take ages, granted it isnt all to blame on HTC, but seriously with htc track record... we dont want the hero saga again.

It's nice to get something the moment it's announced (although increasingly impossible in this age of internet and FCC leaks), but I also very much like it when companies are transparent about their roadmap.

HTC's track record is indeed not great with the Hero, but let's see, they have publicly stated Q3, so let's hope they make that. A few weeks/months extra for them to code, test and coordinate the massive rollout sounds very much acceptable to me.
