I thought you guys might be interested in this email reply I received this evening:

Currently the most advanced software version supported by this mobile handset is 1.17.

You are correct that there was a scheduled update to the software that was to take place during the first quarter of 2010. This did not occur due to compatibility issues with the mobile handset and the 2.1 software version. As a result this has not yet been completed. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you.

I know I may be nitpicking here, but I see two problems with the email you received:

1. The update to 2.x we are all looking at is for firmware not software. The simple fact that *steven* mentions the 1.17 software update in the same breath as 2.1 firmware makes me think he was reading numbers off of a screen somewhere and is using the terms interchangeably.

2. We have all seen so many contradictory statements made in these types of emails that they are almost just silly at this point and indicates that these reps are just as mis-informed as the people working the corporate stores who told a lot of us that we would "definitely be updated to 2.x on January 22nd, no wait, February 19th, no wait, some time in Q1, no wait, etc, etc, etc..."

I do appreciate you sharing your exchange, but take them with a grain of salt. :D

Also, concerning waiting your 1-2 years.... I understand "Lessit" but disagree with it. I would rather pay to have the technology and use it NOW than to wait and use it later. That argument gets little enjoyment as there will always be something new, better, different. If it works for you.... GREAT!. But if you are like me.... Want things to work, like gadgets, have a little extra $$$ to part with and know that HTC can do better than the Eris... you are buying. Incidentally, I have five lines on our Verizon plan. One is always up for an upgrade... So in reality it only cost me about 230 of which I can easily sell the droid and Eris and make a goos some of cash after paying for the Incredible.

Good luck boys. Hope the update hits this year. If not this year, I don't think it will EVER come out.
I don't know if you meant this for me because I agree that if you have the money great, the Incredible is a nice upgrade. The only point I have been making is that there seems to be many people who badmouth the Eris hoping they can convince themselves and concoct some story to squeeze an upgrade out of Verizon.
In that case, I'm asking them to consider that, while the Incredible is a very good phone, it's not that much better than the Eris - to the point that your jumping through your underwear to get one. You may get your way once, but Verizon will have you flagged as a malcontent and you'll get no favors from them in the future.
My suggestion is to take a more unbiased look at the Eris and you'll find it is an incredible phone in it's own right. If you must expend all kinds of effort why not save it for a 1.5Ghz, dual core (with all the attendant goodies) running on the LTE network - now that's an upgrade!! Again, this is advice only for the schemers. If you've got the money and your contract is up, go for the Incredible.

Nothing official about it.

But there were issues in the last software that they're rectifying. I'm sure some of you have experienced them.

Good to hear from you NKT!
So, in your unofficial opinion. If you were to choose between rooting or waiting on something official, which would you do?

If you think that the Verizon store reps or phone CSR's really know what is going on with this upgrade, then go in there and just make something up. Ask them if they have heard anything about the 1.7 update yet. Or just come up with some other fact that is mixed in with silliness. If they are being truthful, the answer is, "I don't know." They may speculate and should say so if they do. They don't know any more than we do and Verizon doesn't feel that they NEED to know. I don't know why but that's just the way it is.

I'd choose rooting the new load ;)

But really, if no issues are noted in the new software I'd say it'd probably be ready by mid-May for OTA. I know a lot of people are mad that the Q1 date passed, but there's a reason VZW tests the way they do.

Thanks for dropping by to keep the upgrade fanatics from losing their minds. :)

I was talking with a Verizon rep at a store while my friend was buying an Incredible. She had an Eris too and said that the update should be coming out relatively soon. When they were being trained on the Incredible she asked about the 2.1 update, since she has an Eris as well, and she was told the update is finished on the HTC side and Verizon should be rolling it out by mid-May at the latest...

Trying not to stir the pot too much, just passing along what I had heard.
