Root **Official** Droid X encrypted bootloader and efuse thread

This is my point. besides, me...personally...i look at the phone out the box. i dont wanna windows mobile project phone.
i want it to first...just work! then when im bored i`ll root it. play with it etc.
all the reviews are getting me hype again for the x!!
anyone want an incredible in immaculate condition, with a clam shell case/holster....8gbs SD, cords and car charger...the rest of my rebate card with verizon with about...$6.85 on it

^This is 100% correct. I don't think the comments about the BB really apply here. We're also talking about making a great phone almost perfect, not a crappy phone almost acceptable.
I understand why people are saying that they don't care that the bootloader is locked. Obviously this phone is already going to be pretty awesome and we're hearing a lot of positive stuff. I think people are also doing the whole "I'm going to defend the phone I like" dance to some degree too (not saying it's a bad thing).
I think people may also be forgetting the following pattern:
> Phone is announced
> We hear almost all good and people get suuuper excited
> Phone is released
> We hear that there are a ton of issues that we didn't know about before
> An OTA is released, but it doesn't address even 1/8th of the problems.
> Users try to find work-arounds or ways to resolve the issues but are only moderately successful
> Phone is rooted
> Hackers fix the rest of the issues with a custom ROM
Now think about this process without the last arrow-point. The point is that they've crippled Android in a big way here and I think that needs to be acknowledged. Keep in mind this has happened to all of the best Android phones to date. It seems pretty obvious that this will also happen to the DX too based on past history.
Again, it is important to note how wonderfully advanced our devs are: we aren't talking about a crappy OS like the BB OS.
I agree im sure there is a dev out there who wants to take the challenge of trying to crack the bootloader just like anything else out there everyone wants to be the first to do something and if they crack this im sure it would get them alot of recognition and possibly $$

I don't want anyone taking my comments as set in stone. I am not nearly talented enough to hack the X so there very well may be some way around it. We won't know for sure until every gets it in there hands and takes a crack at it.

I think we can all agree that some of the top Android hackers have probably had time to try cracking the Milestone's encrypted bootloader: the Milestone has been out for ~ 7 months now (I think) and no one has been successful yet. Common sense says it's unlikely that Motorola would use less sophisticated encryption on the Droid X. Thus, I think if the bootloader is encrypted, we can pretty much assume that it will not be cracked. As another user pointed out, since the latest and greatest Androids will be out before we even hit 7 months, the hackers will be moving on if there has been no progress by that time.
I guess we will just have to wait and see how things play out you never know what will happen in the next few months

There is some truth to this though not fully. Wouldn't be the first time a company tried to upgrade their protection and got a down grade in reality. Hell even another phone using similiar encryption could give enough information to allow them to break it.
Wait and see is all we can do, personally I will be fine with the Motorola ROM. But if there is a way to hack and load custom roms I likely will be loading one.

There are just sooo many customization options available for root users. Customer notification bars, custom rosies(not launchers not like adw or launcher pro, but like with aloysius and evil eris) flashing custom fonts, Free wifi tethering, customer lock screens. That is what I like most about rooting. Yes you can overclock, but how much difference will that make with this beast? especially after froyo.

While not having a front facing camera didn't put me off from the X, this might. I really hope the X can become rootable while still being able to put custom roms. I have a rooted G1 and I cannot imagine not being able to unleash what is possible with a phone when rooted.
So far the ROMS I've flashed to the Dinc don't impress me over the one that came with it, other than they have all the cool root apps already installed and running. If I could get wifi tether working on my Dinc I would go back to rooted stock. So no big deal to me if I can't flash a ROM. It fun to be able to but not a big deal to me if I can't.

It becomes a big deal when there is a far superior iteration of the OS available. In this case, they have promised to release Froyo for the DX pretty quickly, but what if they jump right to the next version very quickly after that? Will the DX get it quickly? Will it get it at all? See you aren't assured that it will, and even if you do get it, who knows how long that would take. With an unencrypted bootloader, you have the option to take advantage of the power and functionality of the new versions and the tweaking without the manufacturer saying that you can.
Some people wanna wait for the hall pass to go take a piss, while others realize that being able to go without permission and supervision is much better. Hell, if you want, go ahead and roam the halls a bit on your way to the pisser, it isn't like someone is waiting for the hall pass.... (Please enjoy that terrible, terrible analogy... or whatever it is.... lol)

Is this going to be as big of a deal anymore since Google announced that they will be starting a policy of one major update to Android a year?

Can't you still use the car charger on the X?
roam the halls...but o yeah, it could be a pedophile on the lose and no one knows where you are (no support for roms except the maker and no verizon support either!). im all for my hacker. but i want to hack within reason. and lately, android out the box is great!
i myself will be treading lightly though. i want to be at the cutting edge...not the bleeding edge. just give me root to remove stuff. i`ll try a custom rom or a leaked rom later. i just want the X NOW!!!

There is a reason why you have to wait for the updates, so I can also live with out hacked, buggy updates if need be. I have no problem waiting a few months for the official less buggy version though also if I have to.
It seems like people that insist on being able flash ROMs main reason is basically some sort of "I have to have it now" mentality.

I wasn't aware they had announced that. While they may stick to that, I do have a hard time believing it.... As I'm sure you know, upgrading to the newest OS is just one benefit of custom ROMs. This is undoubtedly a big deal regardless of how Google changes their policy.
I'm a little disturbed to hear people trying to make the argument that "this isn't a big deal" and we "shouldn't get that upset about this". Android is supposed to be free and open, not closed down (like the iPhone OS). This is a step towards locking down Android and robbing us of additional functionality; I, for one, am certainly upset about it. I guess I kinda hoped that the entire Android community would be just as upset, even if they didn't plan on using custom ROMs....

Noooooo! You gave my terrible, terrible analogy life! lol I agree with you on not pushing the envelope tooooo too much (hell I don't know what I'm doing lol). That said, I do want the ability to keep up with the most recent version of the OS, or at least expand the capabilities of the one I'm using via hackers magical awesomeness that is custom ROMs.

What bothers me is I OWN the device yet they are telling me what and what I can't do with it. I own my car and I can add parts to the engine to make it faster... sure it might void my engine warranty but ITS MY DECISION! I own a Dell and if I wanted linux on it I can... sure they might not support it but the option is there!
I own a Nexus one and the amount of things I can do with custom roms is mind boggling. The N1 was great phone before I unlocked its bootloader and threw a good rom on there but since I've done that its a FANTASTIC phone.

Well said. If I was good with photoshop, I would make some political cartoons showing Motorola turning the Android mascot into an Apple, or putting a leash on an Android, or one of those evolution scenes that shows an Android becoming an Apple. Not cool Motorola/Verizon!

I personally beleive we will get the Root for the X, as well as the Bootloader Hack as well. The worst thing you can do in these type situations is Speculate what will and what won't happen.

Root; absolutely. Bootloader crack; highly unlikely if it's encrypted. History tends to repeat itself and we have already seen Motorola's success with bootloader encryption (Milestone). Since the Milestone bootloader has proven to be uncrackable, this really is closer to fact than to speculation.... (unless we find out that the DX's bootloader is unencrypted)
can someone explain (or point me in the right direction) the things that you can do with root and the additional things you can do with a bootloader crack? it seems that "rooting" doesn't allow you to add any functionality or customization to the phone and that "bootloader crack" is needed to do this. any examples would be greatly appreciated (i.e. with root you can do ____ and _____. with bootloader crack you can do _____ and ____. THANKS!
