.:Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Thread:.

True, I get where you are coming from. But when it comes to price, I may want to just choose a free mod instead of the $20 DLC from Bethesda. They make great games, and they should never be ashamed of what they created.

I've just restarted a play through, first try with the DLCs (only played vanilla before). I'm trying out an armorless mage/spellsword with no destruction perks or spells initially. Very tough. My only weapons sre bound weapons and dawnbreaker, my only armor being level 3 mage armor spells and I have J'zargo as a follower. Plus I made everything more difficult, withe running Wars in Skyrim, Deadly Dragons Hard, Cut Throat Merchants, Travel Tax, banned fast travel, then RLO, Dark Nights, and Dark Lights. Nothing says be terrified of the dark like being attacked by 3 Frost Trolls and a Nether Drake in a ptich black night near Dawnstar, in the middle of a freaking snow storm (each of those can kill me in like 1-2 hits despite having ebony flesh giving me 300 armor).

I swear I'm gonna take this out of the plastic soon :)

I have never played this game with mods, though I need to get it for the PC to play it with mods.... but still not sure if i want to go that route yet :p

Mods make the game so much better. For example, haven't you ever wondered why caves are so bright? Don't you wish they actually were dark like caves are supposed to be? :-)

lord no!

i never carry a torch and I have never been a mage...

so no :)

they aren't always bright either, when you are in the dawnguard quests the cave to get aurials bow is incredibly dark at first.

I'll have to get a screenshot of a night battle in my case. Haha. And dragons are way too easy in vanilla.

not when you are a pure bow class that isn't trying to "cheat" with the alchemy, enchantments and smithing by boosting the damage and armor rating.

fighting dragons can be tough, but if you can stay hidden and use other people to your advantage it is well worth it :)

Meh, not really. All you have to do is stay back and put a Dremora in it's face (via Sanguine Rose) to tank for you. Or run to a giant's camp while sneaking shots and hope it will follow you. A dragon isn't scary when a giant can take one down. That's how I take down dragons with a bound bow (you really can't cheat a bound bow, the only concession I made is to use level 3 mystic binding via Mod to make it as strong as a superior daedric bow. Otherwise it's just like an unsmithed one). Imagine dragons with enhanced strength, life, speed, armor rating and magic resist. Dragons that actually do rain fire from the sky, or creat geysers of frost magic from under your feet. Dragons that kill Potent Storm Atronachs in 3 bites, or pick up Dremora Lords and throw them away like trash. I had a run in with a powered up Elder Dragon yesterday and boy it was a rush! Each arrow I put out only takes about a thread's thickness away from it's lifebar.

Anyway here's what night in my game looks like with the DarkerNights, Dark Light Templates and RLO:

Torchlit:

Candlelight spell:

Night battle:

Dungeons (well it's a fort overrun by Forsworn):

I'd like to see the game a bit darker in some places, Dawnguard did a good job. But the darkness mods and ENBs create weird lighting that is too dark to play sometimes. (like that first screenshot chanchan05 posted. The rest look pretty good though).

There's a balance between immersion and annoying though. -- Like I use Forstfall but have it set to "lite" mode. Similarly, I like the way the dark looks, but there should usually be some ambient light. I dont want to spend the game trying to find my way around in the dark. :)

VS, you have to get Skyrim for PC. I cant even begin to describe how much better dragon fights are after installing Deadly Dragons and trying to play on master/legendary.

Enchanting and smithing are not at all cheating with deadly dragons (and other creature mods on master+), now both the player and the dragons hit harrrrrrd (and have crazy special attacks).

SkyRe is similar but has a different difficulty curve and basically re-does everything --all the perks, damage, weapons, armor, magical effects, and hp/magic/stam

Actually the torch screenshot looks weird. In practice it actually is better than using Candlelight because brightness is just right to not limit night vision too much. The areas beyond the reach of the torch light is still slightly discernible. The magic light makes it almost impossible too see beyond it's range. Maybe the picture compression ruined it.

I run many many enhancement mods that makes my game look pretty good.

I do notice specific issues with lighting, especially glare from the sun coming through brick walls, but this is a minor issue to me.

Have just ordered this for the PC so that I can play it with mods installed,

As i'm only just begginging to get used to PC gaming again, where is the best place to download mods from?

Also are there any essential/favourite mods that people would recommend I install first?

2places: steam workshop and nexusmods. I get mine from Nexus since I'm used to it (that's where mods used to come from before all this steam stuff).

The stream workshop would be the recommended place to start, of the two. It installs and updates the mods for you, which is handy.

Steam's aggressive auto update of mods seems scary though IMHO. I rarely update a mod if it works, I'd rather not take the risk. Though I cant say I have ever been bit by this.

IMPORTANT TIPS EVERY NOOB MODDER SHOULD KNOW
:):):)

1) Dont install a lot of mods at once.
2) Use a fresh save for each mod install
3) back up you saves
4) if a mod has a lot of scripts (quests) or changes meshes /model (the shapes of in game objects) then TEST IT ON A NEW PLAYTHROUGH, not your main character.
5) No matter what someone tells you there is always a risk of corrupting your saves.

That said, modding is awesome -- a lot of the mods are super stable now, I havent had hardly any issues in a long while.

That is exactly what I'm looking for thanks very much. Really looking forward to it arriving now. :):)

The amount of choices of different mods looks crazy!!

Oh yeah, depending on what method you use to install your mods, you may want to check out the BOSS program for arranging the load order. And always test on a separate save when you try new mods.

No offense meant by this at all, but BOSS is not noob friendly and I find it of dubious value. It confuses users warning of dirty edits and suggesting they use stuff like TES5edit (also dangerously complicated for new users). Or to make merge patches, or other advanced things.

It is way beyond what they should be thinking about in the beginning and most often all the warnings are false alarms.

I came across this link of recommended mods:

Skyrim GEMS

+1 GEMS is awesome

I dunno how difficult it could be. LOL. Just click run BOSS and you're good to go. I just use it for the load order. I know that whatever warnings it has, I'm over my head, so I just copy my last save file and test the mod. If nothing wrong happens, then I'm good to go. LOL.

My problem right now is that I've had a couple of CTD's with no known cause as of yet. And the problem is that it's so random. Hours passed after installing my last mods (economy mods so that the merchants have more gold for me to sell more stuff) before it happened so not sure which one conflicted. Both times it happened when I'm just out in the wild riding a horse towards my destination.

I'm starting to wonder if it was the heat. AC is broke and outside temp was reaching 32C today, and I CTD around 11am and 2pm...
