Will there be a charge to tether 4G, and not use the hotspot?
The EVO 4G becomes/replaces/acts like a mobile hotspot. Right?

From what I understand, there is a charge for using the EVO 4G as a mobile hotspot, but there is a little leniency with the 5GB limit. Hope I'm not telling any lies, but that's the gist of the way I understand/remember it.

Has anyone else been able to input their email address on that Best Buy site that was posted awhile back? Something that supposedly BB just put on their site today, allowing you to sign up for availability notifications through them as well. Every link I've followed from here doesn't load the supposed email entry box...just asking.

I was able to put m email in

Hopefully, with the EVO's help, and perhaps a couple more 4G phones by the end of the year....WiMax will be able to entice some big companies as using them for a standard.

Isn't the Galaxy S coming to Sprint? It would be smart for Sprint to throw a WiMAX radio in there to set it apart from its counterparts on the other carriers.

Maybe so, but that app is an integral part of the phone. I saw a video where they were just going into "Router Settings" or something like that.

From the way I understand it, you will be able to tether without the extra charge, but there's a limit of 5 GB, I believe.

If you're just going off of the rumors on this site, I think you've got a couple things mixed up. I think the limit you're talking about is a limit on 3G data (the numbers match up).

If Sprint decides to charge extra for tethering (and I think they will), I'm not sure how they'll prevent someone from just using an Android app that allows it.

my hero tethers on 3g but there is the 5 gb cap, and is not a mobile hotspot.

If the EVO 4G can tether the 4G data would there be a cap on it without using it as a hotspot? (only the device itself)

For anyone who is having trouble with the Best Buy site and isn't able to sign up for notifications, if you'd like you can PM me with whatever email address you'd want notified and I will sign you up as soon as I can.

Sprint wouldn't just be "throwing a WIMAX radio in there". That change would be done at the manufacturer, and would be a big deal. IF the rumors are true about AT&T and Tmobile getting the phone, it would have to be a VERY different phone (2 different chips, one for cell data, and one for 4G) to actually work. Samsung has said that it want's the phone on all carriers, but they never said anything about 4G though...

Sorry, but based on the current rumors, I don't see this phone getting 4G.

Oh they'll let people use it, they'll just charge them a per-use fee just like all phone companies charge for USB tethering.

Sprint puts a "soft" 5GB cap on 3G data usage (if you go over it a lot they can give you crap but most people have no issues)

Sprint will not cap 4G data usage. What they may do is charge anywhere from $10-20 per month to use the tethering application which turns the phone into a mobile hotspot a-la WMWiFiRouter on Win Mobile. This is how Verizon did it on the Pre Plus but then they cut this charge since the Pre wasn't selling for crap.

This is not set in stone so maybe they will get generous and make it included in the regular price for now. Either way, this is likely the only place there will be an extra charge.

Chances are there will be third party apps and other hacks that will allow you to tether without using the official Sprint hotspot app. This will come in handy for those of us who may want to use it on rare occasions but not often enough to warrant a monthly charge.

I haven't seen any news on this. I've seen AT&T Rumors and TMobile rumors. Sprint wouldn't just be "throwing a WIMAX radio in there". Sorry, but based on the current rumors, I don't see this phone coming to Sprint.

I've seen it reported that all four carriers will be getting it at one point or another with AT&T and Tmo getting it first.

I was going from memory. If you think it's 3GB and not 5GB, I'm with you. I don't really understand your idea of using an app to tether if it's already built in. Don't you think Sprint will be able to monitor how much data your phone is using each month? I have to believe it will be metered. How else will they know if you've used the 3GB or not?

Here is a thought and do no think I saw this mentioned anywhere. Wouldn't it be a great idea for the EVO to allow one to print information from your phone?

Okay, so I’ve gotten a bit confused by all this. What do you see as the difference between tethering and using the phone as a wifi hotspot? Aren’t they basically the same thing? Or when you are talking about tethering are you referring to connecting the EVO directly to just one other device (such as a laptop) via USB or something along those lines?

That is what I was implying just tethering via USB.

I must say, tongue-in-cheek, why bother signing up for ANY site to receive e-mail notifications regarding the Evo.

If you continue to keep tabs here, you'll most certainly be the first to know! :D

He makes a good point, I could think of a dozen reasons not to give them you e-mail address though. Reason number one starts with an S and ends with a pam.

Wimax wasnt expected to live long anyway just a stop gate till lte was fully functional sprint was planning on going LTE anyway if you watched the CTIA key notes.. its to bad LTE and wimax coudlnt get along and play together would have been faster for everyone.
Huh????????????

I know this is EVO page, but Nexus One is no longer going to Verizon. I wonder would this be the case for Sprint because of the EVO as well.

Well the Incredible and the EVO are both better devices than the Nexus One so why throw it into a ring where it's gonna get burried by its bigger, better cousins?

I think people are getting confused by tethering and using the phone as a wifi hotspot. Tethering would allow you to connect your phone to your laptop via bluetooth or a USB cable, and use your phones connection for internet access.

A mobile hotspot would allow you to connect your laptop or other device to the phone wirelessly as if you were connecting to your wifi at home or Starbucks or whatever, but your phone becomes the wireless router.

Sprint could easily charge for this (through their app). I could see an Android app being released that would let you do the same thing, but Sprint could still see your data useage. If it was high, you would have questions to answer (and maybe fees to pay)
