I'd venture to say that the bar code/number etching might be on any version (pre-production or final) that is either in circulation currently or being used for beta testing. That way if one shows up in a bar or on ebay can be identified and traced back to the individual who was responsible for it.

not the ones we get, but the ones that are out in the wild. It is a way to track the phones. By final production he means the same specs and software as what we will receive.

Okay, that I agree with. I thought he was talking all production phones. I was like

Ok I've caught up lol
Now going back to that post I posted about Wirefly showing a compare with the incredible and the only difference was the EVO had Global Roaming while the Incredible did not, still confuses me. So I went to the engadget gallery and was wondering the following...

This image shows the SD card slot

also shows the sd card slot, but what is that square thingy at the top?

As you can see in the third photo, there is an indentation just below the square thingy. Its not to help you remove the battery since the battery compartment has two indented slots to remove the battery so what is it for?

finally, another shot

Mind you i realize it may not be for a sim card, but that square thing is intriguing as well as the indentation. I doubt it can be modified before shipment, but its interesting none the less.

Comments?

TS out

Maybe that's one of the "surprises" on the final production version of the EVO and it really will be a "world phone."

I mean, just thinking of ways that Sprint could really make a BIG splash against the iPhone, that would definitely be something to factor in! Especially if they're catering to government, healthcare and large corporations as well (something Jackson and eieio mentioned)...this would be ideal for business users.
