Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I'm so pissed right now! I was at a sprint store helping a family member choose a phone because all 4 of our lines are out of contract and I'm preparing to call retentions to change our plan and negotiate discounts/free phones etc in exchange for renewing the lines.

My experience at the store was embarrassingly negative. First of all, the hero and moment on display didn't have the 2.1 update, and the touch pro2 didn't even have the 6.5 update. The guy said he doesn't know how to do an update. The hero was almost completely unresponsive because it probably had a million things running in the background and had no task killer installed. The guy joked that it probably hasn't been reset for weeks. I told him it's probably smart for their demos to be working properly so customers can get an idea of what the phone experience is like. He shrugged. I told him I pre ordered an Evo and that I've followed every single detail about it since the beginning, and he said he had one in the back. I got so excited that I was about to see one in person finally! ...but he wouldn't even let me see it! How frustrating is that?! I was about 20 feet away from an Evo and he wouldn't even let me see it?! If it's an official policy for an advocate for a new phone to not be able to even show it to an excited and enthusiastic customer, then I don't see the point of the advocacy program at all.

It was even "customer appreciation day" at the store! There were 4 employees standing around with lays around their necks, and no customers. It was pathetic. I will never go back to that sprint store, and I got a taste of why sprint is considered a joke to people with at&t and verizon.

Just bought the hero, and not happy that it wasn't upgraded, even worse, that the salesperson didn't even mention that there was an upgrade for it. I go to htc to download the upgrade, it will probably take six hours. I could download hd movies in that time span. I bought it there trying to support sprint, but if I bought it at Best Buy there would have been no mail in rebate.

I have been a nextel/sprint customer for over ten years. I unfortunately have learned to jump through the necessary hoops to get to retentions. They solve my problems where no one else will.

With that said, my last trip into an AT&T store was uneventful, and definitely unprofessional. Staff were talking to boyfriends on the phone, and playing games with one another. Verizon was more professional, but staff did not excite me about the Incredible.

The problem is all of these places get their employee's from the same pool of temporary workers, who are undertrained, and not rewarded properly for good work. The sprint employee's I dealt with, in general, work harder than the others for the sale, and to reduce your monthly rate, they just know little about the product.

I would love to walk into a store where the staff knew more than me about the products they were selling. Usually the people with the knowledge are in the back, fixing the devices OR ON SITES LIKE THIS!!!!!

This is where I love apple. Some of there employee's fit the same bill. However, the product is sold ready to go, with easy upgrades, etc. this compensates for uninformed salespeople. This is why they are control freaks about their products.

Anyway, I hope the evo and the hero work well, because I have invested in them for the next two years.

and it has been said many times that the advocates are not allowed to show the evo's or even allow anyone else to see them. It is theirs to learn with so that when it is released they will be able to answer questions :)

If that's the case then they should also be told to not tell customers that they have one. It just causes frustration with a device this coveted and anticipated. I don't get it, there are no secrets about the device, they handed out thousands of them to the public at the google event today. I would understand if it was before the official announcement and they were protecting trade secrets from a potential spy from another company, but seriously what harm is it going to do to let me hold the phone and check it out for a couple minutes? If what you say is an official rule, then it's a dumb and pointless one.

I agree lol Just trying to help you feel a little better ;) but yes it is their rule unfortunately.

This afternoon I went into BB to return an item and while there I decided to stop by and look at the mobile phones. As I walked up a lady asked if I needed help so I told her I had a couple questions about the EVO. She looked at me a little oddly and asked if I wanted to play with one. My dropped jaw must have been obvious. She pointed to another lady and said she was the Sprint Rep and had a live EVO. So I spent the next 30 to 45 minutes talking with her and checking out the EVO.

Coming from a Moto Q9H on ATT, it looks to be a great phone. A couple of things I noticed or learned are:
-It's all screen.
-Headphones are NOT included but are necessary for the FM radio
-The rep said that our city, Baton Rouge, while not yet on 3G will get 3G next month and 4G next year, meanwhile I could clearly see on the Evo that we already have 3G.

anyone know what the deal is with sprint tv...this is the 3rd review i've read that says it's a disappointment...it's less than stellar on my pre, but i assumed that on 4g and with a snapdragon that it would be a beast...what would contribute to it being crappy on 3 or 4g? i was looking forward to using sprint tv much more on my evo, but i'm starting to think i'll have the same experience that i do with my pre

I'm sure it's SprintTV itself. It's never been a great performer on any of my phones. Always laggy and pixelated.
I don't know how much is done client side if anything is.

Sprint needs to come to their senses and make sprint tv capable of transferring the tv stream over wifi, like it used to be able to do. Until they do that they'll be getting complaints from anyone trying to use it with less than perfect wireless coverage, and it will be a negative point in a lot of reviews. Of course it shouldn't work with the phone radio turned off, so people with unactivated phones can't leech off the service, but as it is now, the program won't even open if your wifi is turned on. ******ed.

Oprah moment at Google I/O today: Everyone attending received an EVO 4G! This phone is amazing. In case anyone is interested it appears several people have listed them on eBay. I purchased one of a gentleman from Chile (it only works in US) and have also posted it on eBay at:

hmmm I must have skip over that one sentence. Oh well.

TS

I would like to see the reasoning behind that sentence. This is the second or third review to imply that the incredible is the better phone(CNET being the other...they gave the incredible a better rating). If this is due to the 10 dollar fee or the lack of avaliable 4g, then i think thats a bit unfair since they are not criticizing the device itself; but if the phone is suffering performance wise to the incredible, them thats another story...

WOW! I can't believe you found the strength to come and inform us. I sure hope you're doing ok. I usually save a section of my prayers for the sick and less fortunate but forget them, I'm praying you recover from this horrible incident and that damn store updates their cell phones!

You said it. The Incredible has been performing slightly quicker than the Evo. Maybe because the Evo comes preloaded with so much crap on it? Who knows. Either way, we need to be concentrating on Froyo 2.2. That OS has been performing so much better than 2.1 it's ridiculous.

FROYO can't come soon enough! Thanks for confirming the performance for me; i had wondered if the evo would be slightly slower than the incredible since the phone has so much stuff packed into it hardware/software wise

a quote from the article:

"htc evo 4g, which is easily the best smartphone available on Sprint and is second to the HTC Incredible as the best smartphone available today."

uhhhhhh, what?

Yeah that first line throws that review right out the window.

I only can see in one instance that the Incredible would be the "best smartphone available today." and that is because its on Verizon. But that is all carrier choice and has nothing to do with the EVO itself.

Ive looked around at other forums, including the Incredible on hear....and just by lurking I have found many topics regarding the EVO.....good, bad and jealousy topics, doesnt matter, means people are still talking about the EVO.
