Thanks, I wasn't sure and had given my friend my extra stylus to use when he got the EVO. So I can't use my nails neither I have to get used to my finger tips? I use my nail now sometimes. I'm sure i'll get used to it.

Your pro 2 has a resistive screen not capacitive. And no the stylus will not work with the EVO since capacitive screens respond to static electricity in your finger tips. Although I heard that some company is coming out with some sort of magnetic stylus that mimics static electricity that will work with capacitive touch screens.

Aside from the capacitive stylus I posted, if you search on ebay there are a TON of them on there for a lot cheaper. You just won't be able to use a "regular" stylus.

Windows mobile was not designed with today's touch screens in mind, and therefore it is sometimes necessary to have a stylus. Android was designed with the idea that a phone shouldnt need a stylus.

I like the desk clock!!!

hi.png

Got a pic of it sideways (in kickstand mode)?

It is not.

But, as with all things, there may be an app for that.
May I ask how you know that? I have the phone, but don't have a dock since those won't be available until launch. Either way, if it isn't the default when it goes in the dock, all you have to do is touch the clock on the Home screen and it goes to "Desktop Clock".

It only works in portrait.

Really? That's too bad. Do you have a desk clock / nightstand app that works in landscape?
That same desktop clock has a button for night mode. When you press it, the screen is black except for the time with the date below it. It works a little like a screen saver by changing position on the screen. When it's in night mode, you can turn it to landscape and use the kickstand.

Hello everyone, it's been awhile. It's true, I bought an EVO from earldriscoll for $500. Thanks Earl!!!

I'm working on some reviews of my own and I will post them here. Today, I'm going out to take videos and pictures with the EVO and in a couple of days, I'll post what I have here at AF.

Tomorrow, I have a get together planned for those that live in the Tampa area. We will be meeting Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm at the Westshore Marriott. One of our members, Mateo is a manager there at 1001 N Westshore Blvd. If you happen to show up and don't see us, ask for Matt McAlister. He said he would be able to provide a boardroom with a conference table, office chairs, wifi, and refreshments.

Hope you can make it,

Bill :)

PS - I want to give special thanks to TS for not giving up on me and for encouraging me to come back here.

There we go, my questions are answered :) Wasn't a hundred pages after all.

That sounds like a pretty awesome feature! How bright is it in Night Mode? Distracting?

Thanks Bill for the HDMI demo. I thought the EVO can only output 720p some websites were saying 1080p. Any who I want to know if we can show a decent widescreen Movie that is 720p encoded. Can Bill or anyone with an EVO give that a try?
Thanks a lot and I can't wait to join the owners club :D

If you have it on charge at the same time, the yellow charging light stays on and then it turns green after it's fully charged. For me, the charging light was too bright, but I'm not sure if the light can be dimmed or turned off. I'll look through the settings and let you know. The clock itself is very dim.

Not all of us ;)

No and it wasn't my intent to insult iPhone users just the general public! :D

I've got a brother in San Fran. and the service there is "craptastic" so I've been told and yet here in Dallas I have some of my lesser educated friends using iPhones with no apparent problems.

I have a movie on my EVO that I made from one of my DVD's. It plays on the HDTV through the HDMI cable, but the movie is made to fit the phone and not the HDTV. The results are very watchable, but it's a smaller picture. A picture is worth a 1000 words:

Taking a picture of the TV screen doesn't produce the best photo, but you get the idea. I do think it's very watchable.

Watchable but strange...I swear some of the demos had these videos playing full-screen. Is there a setting somewhere?

Just talked to a sprint rep, he said they are opening at 6a.m. on the 4th. He said they will only have about 8 devices per sprint store and that they are opening early because of anticipated demand. He said if you come into the store and they are out of them they can ship from the warehouse and the customer will receive the phone on Monday. He said they have about 800 in the local warehouse. I don't know how many warehouses they have or if it is setup by regions. Im in Nashville so I don't know if it applies to every area. I'm glad I ordered my two, still waiting on a call from best buy to confirm appointment. If you didn't preorder, get there early and you may get it on the 7th.

Also he said he loved blackberry phones, but said he was blowed away by it and his favorite feature was the voice to text and using google maps as a wallpaper and seeing the traffic in the area.

I'm assuming he converted it to 480X800 for watching on the screen of the phone, and saving storage space... If there was an option to "view full screen" i would not wanna see what that stretched image would look like, lol.

I really hope that is an encoding issue. Thanks for the pic it did a great job :) what about outputing pictures to the screen? that's another use I want to put the HDMI to :)
Thanks for taking the time to go over this!

Well, 800x480 on a 1280x720 screen wouldn't be too terrible.

The HDMI cable arrived today, so I hooked the EVO up to my TV and tried it...

This is a picture of my TV with the EVO hooked up through the HDMI input.
It's playing the same video that I uploaded to YouTube yesterday.

I've seen some reports about the output looking a little grainy on the TV and I'd have to agree, but I don't think you can expect it to look better than what was taken with the phone. It's still HD and it looks great. I don't think you'll be making any apologies to your friends when they see themselves on TV from a video made with your phone, either. Instead, I think they'll be awestruck.

For those that haven't ordered the HDMI cable yet, the link that cary328is gave is the correct one. Here's the information from his post:

Arrow Electronics - North American Components (NAC)

Put part # 687860003 in the search box.

The cable is 6.56' long and costs $8.40 + shipping

There was some opposing views on the cable length, so I measured it and Cary was right on.

Edit: I just ran the slideshow option from the gallery and the pictures look just about as good on TV as they do on my computer. So that means you and your family can watch slideshows and videos taken with you phone.

I ran a YouTube video and it didn't show up on the TV. That probably has something to do with sensing a 720p connection?

thank you Bill. I just ordered the cable for a total of $18 (shipping and tax included). I figured why wait for Monoprice, even tough I would have saved about $10 probably (current HDMI mini (Type C though, not D) on Monoprice is $6 + shipping)

Bill, did they use UPS for shipping? How long did it take to arrive? (did you use ground?)

Also, I;m glad you are back, buddy. I always look for your posts.Cheers!

Here's my though on your point. . . . I have a rather low opinion of the technical IQ of the general public and I don't think that "even if 4G" has problems or limitations that unless someone tells them there a problem they wouldn't know the difference and that they will focus much more on the other functions and features of the EVO.

Example. . . . look at the iPhone! Some of the crappiest drop rates and network connectivity around. Diehard iPhoners complain about it all the time but they don't stop using the phone and the mindless hurdles continue to buy the iPhone.

I think that though 4G is very important to those of us that know the difference between 3G and 4G that the general public is clueless and probably couldn't tell you what 3G or 4G even means.

I think that Sprint would be much better off touting all the other wonderful function and features of the EVO and not make people's eye glaze over with commercials that spend too much time talking about 4G. I've watched the Clear 4G commercials and they are boring and meaningless to the general public.

Just my two cents,

My concern is that it's being marketed in kind of the wrong way...or that people will have to rethink the way they view their phones and data connections.

Too many people think of Wimax as just "faster internet/data" and are disappointed when it drains battery a bit or isn't as fast as they dreamed.

The way you ought to look at Wimax is like a Wifi hotspot that pretty much blankets your whole city. It may not always be super fast but chances are if you are in a city covered by Wimax and you need to do something data intensive, you will turn on your Wimax radio, do your thing, and then turn it off...much the way you do with Wifi on any other smart phone. Typically you don't leave it running if it's sitting in your pocket because there is no point. You only fire up Wifi or Wimax when you need to stream a video or browse the web or whatever.

If they advertised it more as access to a citywide hotspot rather than a faster version of what they are used to, I think people's expectations will be a little more realistic. Not only that but they can focus on this aspect when talking about the $10 "premium" data fee. Imagine advertising it as "and for only $10 per month, you have access to every Sprint city-wide hotspot across the US."

Instead, you're going to get thousands of people leaving it on all day and then flooding the media with reports of crap battery life, etc.

You are absolutely on point.. and the commercials should stress that. Need to make a video call, down load a large file stream HD movie turn on 4g its there when you need it..

HTC will be rolling out commercials in June then Sprint will follow them.. I hope Sprint gets it right..

Well hopefully HTC does a good job as well if they are running theirs first. I just don't see Sprint advertising this as a city-wide hotspot. When they talk about hotspots they are talking about their $30/mo application.

Real shame too. I'd love to see Evo 4G as a premium phone and the only one that can access an ever-growing list of 4G hotspots. Instead it will be more focused on "4G 4G 4G!" because it looks cool! 4 is more than 3 and the others only have 3G! That's one whole less G!

Shame really. I mean, I'm gonna use it how I see fit but some part of me just facepalms every time a company does a poor job of articulating the strengths and best uses for their products.
