Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I agree with what you're saying, and while some of the decisions they've made are beyond me, I know those decisions are made by people much more knowledgeable on the subject than me. What I don't understand is when you have an Evo on hand, and someone walks in and says can I see it, why not show it to them? Seems to me that would be free advertising. The customer somehow found out about the phone, and showing it to him isn't going to cost anything. If you have accessories in store & someone wants to buy some, why not sell it to them? Worst case scenario, they return it; best case, they keep it.

Now I could understand Sprint saying we want to have accessories available for purchase when we release the phone, but in either case, you're selling accessories.

i'm not sure i understand why everyone thinks sprint is making a bad move by not advertising the phone yet. i think it makes complete sense.

forums like this represent a minuscule part of the demographic that will buy the phone. do you realize how much moaning and groaning and whining and pain everyone has shared here and in other forums for the past month in anticipation of this phone? look how hard it's been for everyone here to wait this long. now imagine that across their entire advertising population. that would not be a pretty site nor would it make for a happy customer base.

it makes sense to me they're apparently waiting until launch to begin advertising.

i don't have any idea why they won't show you the phone. it isn't a traditional "advertising" decision. maybe it is because they want to chain the phones down before letting customers handle them, so they don't get stolen. maybe it is because the corporate insurance that sprint has does not allow it for some good reason that we don't know. maybe it is because those phones are intended to train employees only and they don't want customers fooling with those stock devices. maybe HTC prohibits it. my guess is it is actually an insurance issue.

i used to work in retail years ago. there would be times that i had products in the back that i couldn't sell because they weren't in the computer system. there was no SKU for them. therefore, there was no way to track their sales, which meant we had no way to track "shrinkage" (retail lingo for "theft" bascially). so, because i couldn't sell them, i didn't let customers see them. i, of course, didn't even tell them i had the product.

again, i don't know. but i feel like people love the conspiracy theory angle or the "sprint is soooooo stoopid" angle. there could be a great reason that we don't know.

In theory yes it seems that way.. But think about this with no heavy advertisement Sprint presold 400K?+ phones.. Why would you advertise and you can accomplish this on word of mouth and reviews??

I have said it time and time again the phone is great but wimax-4g makes it an incredible phone.. I would not advertise until the major 4g markets are ready..

If 4g is up and running nothing any other phone can do to touch it.. Not Apple or anyone else..

They need wimax up to make this a superstar of a phone and its not there yet..

30-60 days it will be.. Preselling as many phones as they did in the usa alone is an amazing feat by its self..

you say 400+.... I was looking for pre-order info and couldn't find anything where's your info coming from... link.... as hopalee will tell you... I'm all about the links

my $0.02 on the "why isn't sprint advertising more?" thread...

i work for one of the largest ad agencies in the world. we begin to discuss campaigns for products months and months before they come out. there are tons of metrics that are gathered. surveys are sent out, people are interviewed, focus groups are formed. decisions are made based on tons of data AND the input of the client. tens and sometimes hundreds of people are involved just on the agency level. furthermore, multiple agencies are involved when dealing with a big company like sprint. there may be one agency for digital ads, one for radio, one for tv, one for print, etc.

do we screw it up sometimes? yeah. of course. hindsight is 20/20. but, people, posting a "sprint is sooooo dumb not to advertise this thing all over the place" are saying that with very, very little info.

how often do you see ads for cars that aren't yet out? do you see ads for the new BMW in may when it doesn't come out until september? how about TVs? do you see ads for a sony TV that you can't buy yet?

now, i am NOT saying this is the reason we don't see hundreds of evo ads on TV. and i am not saying this strategy will turn out to be a good one. but, we might want to take a step back and realize that a) most of us know a lot less about advertising than the people sprint has hired b) we haven't seen any of the metrics and c) we need to stop thinking that "some guy at sprint" forgot to click send on the "start the evo ads now" email.

in the meantime, it makes the evo easier for us to get. :-)

Well said.... I would have to say this is one of the better explanations.

HTC Confirms HTC EVO 4G Android 2.2 Froyo Update
Written by: Gundeep Hora on 5/25/10 | Filed Under Mobile | Share

After Motorola, HTC is the second company to confirm a roll out to Android 2.2 Froyo update. In a statement to PCMag, it said all major HTC handsets will get the update in the near future. “We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the updates,” the company said. Rest assured the EVO 4G will be the device to get the most amount of attention from the company, and we expect HTC to release the update for the hottest Android phone in the market immediately

for any of you that have the evo already, have you put any movies on it yet?...i'm preparing for friday by loading up on some movies using handbrake, and i'm trying to set my picture to 800x480 and the most it'll allow me is 720...i've been told this is due to the source file, and every movie i load up says the source is 720, but i was wondering what kind of movie would i need to have in order to make my conversion have a full 800...i would like to be able to utilize every inch of that gorgeous screen real estate...thanks

Have you tried 480x800? As you have it, you have a humongously tall and skinny movie :).

Uh no he has it the right way. Resolutions start off with width then height ex. 1920 x 1080p. All TV's are wider than they are tall so you'll see a correlation with the res numbers.

His evo.

Out of boredom, I was over in the Mac forums and reading that massive thread they have about the EVO and I was surprised to see that one or two of their diehard iphone fans is seriously considering to switch over to get the EVO. shocking.

And what is this I hear that Sprint has already sold 400,000 EVO units? In 2 weeks without advertising and just on word of mouth and reviews. INteresting.

I'm still waiting on a link...

I'm still waiting on a link...

haha you remind me of a friend of mine, I used to tell him something and he'd be like "link?"

it is a good practice to include the source of the info you've come across, I for one got tired of digging through my history to find my sources so I've included them w/ all of the tech news in google buzz back and for w/ friends.

VZ advertised before the release of the original Droid IIRC and we know how that launch went.

No, no... sorry to sound like I was being rude, I included you because I figured we both wanted a link to were ever the 400K preorder info came from...

Don't apologize, someone has to moderate the moderator!

A very successful campaign. One that I would probably choose as well.

However, perhaps they were testing the water with pre-orders and found that they did not need to advertise to sell out the existing stock. Perhaps they will wait until launch when they can build up more stock, so they don't market a product that is in short supply.

You need a high def movie file. Something you have ripped from a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Downloadable HD movie trailers in 720p should do it also.
